I hate to sound like an Arsenal fan but how were we denied a penalty (or three) last night??

1. Terry clearly deliberately kicked/shinned Torres as he jumped over him. Definite penalty (and a red card?)

2. Ballack clearly moved his arm towards the ball and made contact. Definite penalty.

3. Cole's shove in the back. In the context of how the ref was managing the game, that was definite penalty too. If that happened outside the area, the ref was giving a foul all night.

I make that three indisputable penalties that we should have had. I can understand the ref missing the Terry assault on Torres, but not the other two. But then again, when you see the gross incompetence of the linesman failing to give a blatant foul right in front of him (Ashley Cole on Kuyt), nothing should surprise us.

Rant over (for now).

on 3...

A minute or so later, out on our right touchline, Arbeloa bumped into someone while going up for the ball

Oddly, a foul was given.

Exactly.

I seem to recall screaming something along the lines of "oh that's a foul out there, is it???" The bottling Russian-funded c***.

F*** it, rant not over.

Wasn't too sure abot the penalties.

But one thing that summed up the referee's performance for me was Cole's tackle on Kuyt as he went past him on the touchline.

How that was not given was laughable.

Don't expect the media to go on about it for the next week though. That #1 on Torres was disgraceful and UEFA should look into it retrospectively as the ref didn't act. They won't though. More great commentary from the thickie twins: "I don't think it was deliberate, but he could have avoided it if he'd have wanted"

The Cole tackle on Kuyt was not only a foul it was a definite yellow card.

Ballack was handball.

And in the context of other decisions the ref gave free kicks for very minor pushes and tugs but nothing in the box. In the context of the way he did that penalty count could have been something like 6-3.

What penalties could Chelsea have been given?

the drogba one that wasn't a penalty. the ref could have given it and ITV and SKY might have given it a 'harsh', but certainly wouldn't have branded it as ridiculous. the referee could have got away with giving it

He could have - it would have been a huge mistake but he could have given it.

Interested to know if there were any others that might have been given. I can't think of one single incident that could have been misinterpreted as a foul in our area.

It would have been a huge mistake but if he'd given it not many commentators would have branded it as incompetent refereeing, a few might have called it harsh and would probably have referred to our 'luck' in the last round and called it karma. From that point of view he would have been safe in giving it.

Don't remember anything else in our box that came close to a penalty.

Just mentioned that in another thread. That was baffling.

I spotted the ref's position for the Ballack handball and it was terrible - not surprised he missed it.

The push in the back by Cole - bottled it !! He gave those frees all night long and some more when there wasnt even any contact.

the ref was fkin appalling all night long.. i couldn't believe some of the decisions.. baffling..

For both sides as well.

The very definition of a whistle-happy European ref. Though strangely card-shy.

To come away from last nights game at 1-1 when it could have been 3 or 4-0 without any of the pens is bad enough, I don't even want to start thinking about pens.

Really odd refereeing last night.

F365 are claiming that Chelsea suffered most fromthe Ref - the Drogba penalty (even while admitting he fouled Carra, and Carra got the ball, and it was outside the area!), the penalising Terry for a foul on Reina (Even though Drogba didn't put the loose ball in, and the ball was cleared anyway!), and the Free Kick that led to our goal (even though, iirc, they won the ball back only for FFL to lose it). The 'journo' is a better gooner, though, so say no more

And the referee, Mr Anatoly Gazprom of no-fixed dacha was fuming because of it!

we were a bit fortunate that a foul was given there

apart from that decisions favoured them especially the 2 cole fouls on kuyt

what really annoyed me though was they constantly led with their arms and battered torres and got away with it

will need a strong ref at stamford bridge otherwise torres will be kicked off the park

terry is reverting to type and is a nasty player - the knee into torres is best example of this.

we need to exploit cech's vulnerability on crosses next week

That's not right - he didn't get anywhere near the ball. Still not a penalty though, for the other two reasons you mention.

i don't think that would have been a free in the league.

terry stood his ground and reina was trying to push past him

didn't matter as ball was cleared anyway before whistle

They kept showing the replay and saying "I can't see a foul there".

Have a look at Terry - he's doing a Munich impression with his arms spread out like that, FFS. It's a f***ing foul all day long.
