BG Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 The basic issue for me, the reason why we are behind the other teams still, is that we are carrying too many players. Some of those work very hard but aren't good enough. It's clear as day that of the players who play in attacking positions only Torres, Gerrard and (perhaps) Kewell are good enough to be starters at a team trying to win the league. Pennant is nowhere near that level, nor is whoever plays with Torres when we play two up. I also think that we need more from the full backs (Finnan was good going forward today). I also think Xabi needs to offer more - he makes too few decisive passes for me. That's the main reason why I'd have Mascherano ahead of him, for me he influences games more and allows other players to push on more.
Guest GrandpaSimpson Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 Maybe our manager isnt good enough either. He was afterall the one that signed them.
fildo Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 Too many passengers in the crowd as well. We were on top that whole game and the only noise came from about 200 wigan fans.

Swipe Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 Kewell? He was shocking tonight. He wouldn't get anywhere near the starting 11 of the other big three. Nowhere near. A novel idea would be to recruit players who can actually f***ing pass a ball. This season has seen some of the worst passing performances from us in years.

Guest newfavouriteplayer Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 Maybe our manager isnt good enough either. He was afterall the one that signed them. It's not just signing them - it's getting them to compete, every minute of every match. Still the managers job.
Tyler Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 too many players who don't have the right mentalitymanager has to take blame for that need to be able to beat teams like wigan especially when we go one up scrap for fourth place is on now all we can hope is that arsenal stop united from closing in on our record
crisps Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 (edited) It's so obvious what we need and it's just so boring discussing it now as we have been for the last 10 or so years. We've got new owners and they're going to have to make decisions quick I think. It's obvious we need about £60m worth of attacking talent to get anywhere near the top and they really have to decide quick if Benitez is the man for this. Everytime we play s***, half come on here moaning then half moan at them calling it kneejerk but there's gotta be a point particulally 20 games into a season where it stops being kneejerk and I really think that's now Edited January 2, 2008 by crisps
AE Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 Who would the other three take from our squad?ReinaTorresGerrard Maybe Carrager and Agger who else? Says it all really.

Jim D Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 Pennant isn't good enough and God knows why he was given a start tonight when he has only just come back from injury, Rafa did the same with Kewell. Just goes to show if they are our two best wide players because Rafa is so desperate to play them then we are seriously fooked. Pennant and Kewell are nothing more than squad players who can do a decent job when called upon for, but we need more than that attacking wise.
Swipe Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 Keeper, defence and central midfield - we're right up there with the other three. No doubt. However, we're second rate in attack (save for Mr Torres). The difference between our attack and Uniteds is staggering. Still.
Flasher Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 Who would the other three take from our squad?ReinaTorresGerrard Maybe Carrager and Agger who else? Says it all really. Alonso, Masch, fergie wanted Kewell, quite sure Crouch and Riise would generate interest too. And Yossi, Finnan, Aurelio, Babel (wanted by Arsenal)..... The biggest difference for me is self belief. We have the players, but not the winning mentality. Only 3 or 4 of our players have that "i'm gonna try an win this" attitude. Not enough. That is something Rafa has to sort too, not the players.
Barnesy_10 Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 hope he gives the kids a run out against Luton.... they must sit back sometimes and wonder what the f*** they have to do to break into the first team.
Swipe Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 He was MUCH better than Penant. No he wasn't. And Pennant was s*** anyway, so makes no odds. Kewell's move for the night seemed to be get the ball, then fall over.
kenny7 Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 Is there any benefits in tryin to blood the likes of Nemeth and Insua in the league?

I think to be closer Kewell needs to be your worst attacking player. As it is after Torres and Gerrard, I'd say it's him next.
shanks59 Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 The main problem is there are NO goals in our team! if Torres or Gerrard is not doing it we as one dont do it! its all well and good hitting 8 and 6 when the teams cave in but what about getting the second goal and killing the teams off! Rafa needs to be backed with the cash of another quality forward(Anelka et al) Skinny, yosser, jar, harry, all need to go not upto it when the chips are down end of.

We disagree on Kewell tonight but I suspect we agree on the broader point which is that none of the other attacking players contribute enough. I still think that if Xabi is not contributing enough either: too few assists, too few decisive passes (which is what you want from a playmaker).

Yeah, he's had a strange season and a half Xabi. Rarely has stinkers, but can't recall too many blinders either. Struggle to remember that many recent assists either.

I think Xabi is an excellent footballer but I'm still not totally convinced by him in the premier league.
