And that of every other team in the prem - with the possible exception of Spurs and Villa

SG, Carra, Carson, Pennant, Owen ;) , Hobbs

That would mean Agger and Reina not playing

It could never happen now so we dont have to worry about it, the worse that could happen is a quota of EU players but that wouldnt affect us too much.

They couldn't do it anyway.

Even the most mediocre of players would be going for extortionate fees simply because they were English. The same clubs would be competing for the best available English players, forcing mid-table teams to look to the even poorer talents - thus increasing the gap even further between the top four and the rest.

We have a few young uns though, Anderson, Guthrie, Hamill by the time some of the players in the U18s are ready for the first team they'll probably be able to become British anyway :)

Won't happen and would be awful if it did.

Freedom of labour and movement is absolutly fundamental to the EU and there is no way there will be a hugely high profile exception to this whatever UEFA and FIFA think. Apart from anything else it would be hugely detrimental to the interests of the majority of countries' players.

Can't see it happening, but if it did I suppose our 5/6 English would be SG, Carra, Pennant, Guthrie, Crouch - and maybe Kewell if we can persuade him to be an honorary Englishman. He wife is English, isn't she?

Think he had a british passport anyway, I seem to remember that one or both of his parents were english. This meant he was able to sign for Leeds while another Australian player couldn't(can't remember who).

Also think I have seen a clip of Harry when he was a kid saying he wante to play for England.

Hobbs at RB

Reina at LM

 Pepe must play centrally surely!!

IF a rule like this would be introduced I can't help feeling that it will hurt English clubs more than Spanish and Italian and maybe even French and German. They would worse in the European cups and how that would benefit the national team (which a lot of this is about, right?) I cannot see. Concerning the overall competitiveness of club football then yes I think it would help. It would be a lot easier for smaller clubs to make advanced league positions.

One other effect of this rule is that a player like Stewart Downing becomes worth about 20m in transfer fees...

It would also mean English players market value in terms of wages would rise (vs other British players and other EU players) which is yet another reason why the EU won't allow this to happen.

Ironically IMO the best way for England to improve would be for more English players to play abroad so they learnt different styles of football, learnt to play at different paces etc.

You could have a point there. But when I think really hard about it, I actually don't care at all ;)

or another question along the same lines:

the Bilbao example - only basques can play! So only scousers could play for us - how would that work?

My deepest apologies in advance. I promise I'm off to bed now:

Obey, get your coat.

It would be a very very dark day in football if that happened. And if said quote was introduced would it not be "home-grown" players or anyone from Britain? They'd have to slash ticket prices too because Im not paying £30 to watch Pennant and others of such low ability every week.

Reina

Hutton

Carragher

Agger

Arbeloa

Gerrard

Alonso

Nolan

Richardson

Torres

Crouch

Finnan would count as an English player, he was born and bred in England and has a British passport. Kewell qualifies for one too. Riise probably does through residency too.

If a 5 English player quota was introduced.., What would your team be?

Alan Derschowitz, Johnny Cochrane, Rumpole of the Bailey, Al Pacino's character in Devil's Advocate and various characters created by John Grisham.

Well bred, certainly. Born in Limerick though, wasn't he? He would count regardless though, same as Kewell.
