Rafa Benitez has revealed he would be open to extending his Liverpool contract following talks with owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks.

The Liverpool boss met the American duo on Sunday, following the 1-0 defeat to Manchester United, to discuss the recent stand-off.

Benitez had been critical of the owners' lack of understanding of the transfer window, but is confident any problems have now been resolved.

And, having won the FA Cup and UEFA Champions League during his Anfield tenure, the Spaniard aims to win the Premier League and prolong his reign.

"I am quite at ease," Benitez told Sport newspaper. "I would like to fulfil my contract and extend it, if possible.

"My family has settled very well and, to me, the respect and appreciation of the public in England is incredible.

"We are already very close to winning the Premier League. We are now eight points ahead of what we had last year and we have made progress in the Champions League.

"We are in a good position, but others also invest, progress and evolve."

Benitez also played down his row with Gillett and Hicks, and revealed the level of support he had received from Liverpool fans across the globe.

He added: "It has been a little exaggerated. The Americans want the best for the club and so do I.

"The only thing they want is that we sit down and talk because there is a difference in language and a significant distance. I think there must be better lines of communication.

"I am calm. I am confident that things are going to settle and we will succeed.

"40,000 signatures on the internet supported me to continue at the Liverpool helm. The signatures came from Australia or from Asia. Many supporters of Liverpool around the world are supporting a coach who has won major titles for the club

Could this be Rafa putting more pressure on the owners?

Back me or sack me

Just as with the approaching window this will be a test of what they really think about him. Are they willing to back up the words.

i think he genuinely wants a stint at the job as long as Wenger and Sir Alex. He wants to complete the job by winning the league and i think he has committed himself to that. I don't see him as a quitting man once he sets himself a target.

Agree, will he get the chance though?

I hope he does get the chance and the better quality the player he gets in the less moaning we'll do about squad rotation as as it is now, whey Torres is swapped for Voronin or anyone else we look well short. Same might be said of Gerrard.

i really don't know. There is so much written in the media, speculation, i guess not even Rafa knows.

I really hope so though.

Well he's going to have have to up the return of the scouting network and be allowed to use it, because he's going to have to come up with top quality players for price of average to good ones, because I doubt very much we'll be able to pay the market rate where we're heading.

its a good sign, it means that he is happy with the Owner's promise to him about money being available to him, Not sure he will want to stay if he was told that they won't be money to compete with ferguson and chelsea

If there were rumours circulating that you were going to be replaced by Mourinho in the summer I'm sure you'd want a contract extension too.

yer i guess thats another way of looking at it. Good point!

I took it as being a positive comment too. He's had his talks with the owners and is happy to extend his contract under these terms (or simlilar).

Rafa wants to stay. He clearly loves the liverpool way, i.e. the fans respect, anfield atmospehere, and hopefully imo he will stay here for many years to come. We also know that He also reads the net.

If memory serves he also asked for a contract extension during the second half of his last season with Valencia. Didn't get one mind.

that was different, the valancia owners were c**** who failed to fulfil their promises :o

Never entered my head that this was a bad thing. Saying things are going well with the new owners and he is happy with their promises to him and wants to stay. I would never have taken that as a negative comment meant to put pressure on the owners.
