Liverpool are likely to reject Valencia's bid to sign left-sided defender John Arne Riise in the January transfer window.

Valencia manager Ronald Koeman has made the Norwegian his top target and is ready to test Rafa Benitez's resolve by launching a £4 million move for the 27-year-old's signature.

Koeman aims to get Valencia's season back on track having failed to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League and sees Riise as the ideal signing to bolster his side's squad.

The Dutchman, who left PSV to join Valencia last month, said: "He is a player with experience and would offer some options for our game."

Even though it is thought Benitez has been told by Liverpool's American co-owners that he would have to sell in order to bring in new players he is unlikely to want to offload Riise.

Despite Benitez's fondness for squad rotation, Riise, who cost the club £4.6m when he joined in 2001, is a regular at Anfield and can play at either left back or left midfield.

Benitez is keen to secure the funds to make Javier Mascherano's switch permanent but could decide to sell midfielder Momo Sissoko to free up some of the £17m needed to complete Mascherano's signing.

As well as looking to seal Mascherano's future at the club, Benitez is also keen on bolstering his defence with AC Milan's Kakha Kaladze thought to be his prime target.

The Georgian central defender is under contract with the Rossoneri until 2010.

He hasn't got a long contract though, or a right foot for that matter.

£4 million is peanuts though, i'm sure we could do better.

Did you not see his effort on sunday in the first half?

It was so frustrating, he'd worked himself into a position beautifully. I was about to forgive him for season's worth of cack and then, as if in slow motion I noticed it had arrived onto his right foot.

Had to laugh on Sunday. Riise cuts in from the by line and is attacking the penalty area then has a shot with his right foot that skews off towards the corner flag, so I shouted at the telly "Bllody 'ell, Riise, get a right foot will ya" My seven year old daughter says "He's already got one, dad". "I know he has, but he doesn't use it properly".... "he does, it helps him stand up or he'd fall over and look he's running".....

I think the writing off of Riise is ridiculous. He's a very good player, who has his aberations.

It's a positive sign of how the squad's developing that Riise is now 'officially' our worst player.

He had Ronaldo fully in his pocket on sunday, the only time ronaldo managed to do anything was late on when Riise went off

Yes it is a very positive sign.

I am just getting very frustrated with Riise, he is getting worse game by game. It is not ability he is lacking, it is a brain. His ridiculous shooting on sight takes the pressure off the opponents when we really need to be piling it on. The 1 goal every 100 efforts is not worth it.

Whoever thinks Riise is our worst player is clearly mad.

He's (quite possibly) the weakest player in our first eleven. Then again, our leftback usually is. He's worth keeping. I still prefer him to most of the left backs we've had over the last 20 years.

Nowhere near as bad as current forum lore.

He should be in the footballing record books for chronic one-footedness, though. How can he still be that insultingly pathetic on his right after, what, seven years in the top flight in English football?

we were having this conversation on sunday. between riise's right foot and our general f***ing appallingness with set-pieces, it would be fascinating to know what we actually do in training sessions.

If this was the '70s he'd just be kept back taking right-footed free kicks with a medicine ball and having steak injections into that thigh.

Play dominoes is my guess. It sure as hell isn't anything practical

 He texts with his right hand, and his left foot has over-developed to compensate for it.
