A mixture of 1 and 2. If he proves he deserves a chance here then great - if he doesn't then we can give the impression we value him anyway and bleed the buying club dry.

Isn't this the 3rd or 4th Guthrie thread on here in the past few weeks?

Anyways, he seems to be doing well for them. Was he 'injured' when we played them or why did he not play? edit: just read the article, so he the rules prevented him to play against us.

If he's a good player we should keep hold of him, there's no reason not to.

We need players who are the equivalent of the Fletchers,O' Sheas and Browns.

Not world beaters, but not mugs either, who are happy to sit on the bench and play the occasional game when there's injuries.

I don't think Guthrie's achievement in holding down a place in a premiership midfield, at 20, should be easily overlooked.

Lucas Leiva is 20, clearly a good player, but is he definitely better than Danny Guthrie ? I'd love to see how Guthrie would do coming into our team playing the way it is at the moment.

I'm pleased that Guthrie is doing well at Bolton but Lucas looks a class apart. .

Ill give you 5 reasons he will be sold.

1. Steven Gerrard

2. Xabi Alonso

3. Javier Mascherano

4. Momo Sissoko

5. Lucas

Have to say don't like your 4th reason.

I have two reasons why he might not be

1. Mascherano deal could easily not happen

2. Sissoko is probably off

Any time I've committed myself to the penance of watching Bolton play, I've always been seriously impressed by Guthrie. I'd very much agree with D Hodgson above, I don't think coming into a Premiership team at twenty, and establishing yourself so well, should be so easily dismissed.

Bolton look a different side with him in the team, I still don't think he'll make it here though, the better he plays the more money we'll get for him though.

To be honest, I'm not sure he has enough "quality" to make it either but I am really impressed with his achievement this season and hope he does at least get a chance in red at some stage.

Bit different coming into a side like ours though - expectations are that much higher.

I would see sissoko going, lucas promoted to 4th in line, and guthrie if he continues his form, coming back as 5th.

Bit pointless going from a regular in a Premiership side back to the reserves every week.

He should stay at Bolton because he has basically no chance here.

I think regular games are bringing Danny on a level. He always had ability, he stood out amidst his peers in the youth and reserve team. He's now getting a bit more composure and extended experience of playing despite top level pressure.

Its easy to write him off based on a couple of unconvincing debuts on the wing for us, that's never been his position though. In a central area his ability on the ball and ability to spot a pass are more evident. I know this is an area where we're extremely strong but if he continues to prove himself at the Reebok I hope he gets a chance with us. I know central midfield is an extremely competitive area of the side but I don't think that should preclude Danny coming in at 4th or 5th choice and getting a decent number of games to prove himself.

It's important that the best products of our academy, particularly those who demonstrate they can cut it in the premier league, get at least a shot at the first team. We need to keep the prospect of another Carragher or similar emerging, even a Warnock that can fulfill a squad function. I'm not suggesting over promoting players, if they're not good enough get by all means get rid, but the first team squad should include some with the potential to step up given the need.

The local youngsters and those drafted in at early ages have to feel that they'll get a chance if they perform and Liverpool has to give itself the chance to retain some local participation in the side. It's important to the crowd, the club and its position within the city and wider area. If the best local talent can't see the ladder of progression in place they'll gravitate to Everton and elsewhere and we'll lose an important strand of connection between club and region.

Agree with this.

Guthrie looks good in Bolton's midfield.

Lucas looks good in Liverpool's midfield.

And there lies the difference between the two.

They've seen Carra and Gerrard claiming first team spots, because they're good enough, and Warnock got a few games at one stage.

They know that if they're good enough, they'll play.

There's not one local player we've got rid of that you could say has gone on to prove us wrong.

You're underestimating the lure of competing for the title on a regular basis,Champions League football and more money!

The problem he will face is the fact that if he comes back to Liverpool he will be 4th or 5th choice. We ghave seen before that when players get a chance at regular first team football elsewhere being 4th choice even at Liverpool isn't good enough. Over the eyars we have seen the likes of Welsh, FSP, Warnock, ALT and Potter all leave when they have had a chance to get regular football elsewhere.

This old debate again.

I didn't see anything of him that warranted him playing top-standard football, however.

Wrong attitude, and nowhere near enough ability to make up for that attitude.

He did seem to be a bit of a pr*ck, but then most good footballers are.

His pass to Garcia was enough to show what could have been.

Only on the basis of his impressive CV.

I think Lucas looks good, but has been neat and tidy rather than awe inspiring. I think Momo looked even more impressive than Leiva after the first couple of months of his Liverpool career, and he was 20 back then.
