Barca set sights on Mascherano

By BOB CASS - More by this author » Last updated at 20:10pm on 13th October 2007

Stand by for the Tevez Affair Mk II. Barcelona are planning to test Liverpool's desire to hang on to Argentine star Javier Mascherano at the end of the season.

Like his fellow countryman Carlos Tevez, Mascherano's transfer rights are owned by Kia Joorabchian's company and Liverpool must pay MSI £20 million if they wish to make Mascherano their own.

With FIFA planning new rules on third-party ownership, Liverpool have stalled in talks, presumably hoping that they will drive a better deal if there are more stringent rules on the practice that was highlighted by Tevez's protracted move from West Ham to Old Trafford.

Barcelona would expect to get Mascherano for less than £20m, but they could yet outbid Liverpool.

They can f*** off. Should they sign him, he'll find himself sitting at their training camp every match day.

No way.

highly doubt it!

i think either one of Alonso or Mascherano would be perfect for them.

I hope that's not true

What a crock of s***e! When he was signed, it was £10m, last week it was £17m (a first option price) and now it's £20m. It's like the Torres thing - by the time we actually sign him, the media will reckon it's £28m

Couldn't possibly be Kia (or even Rafa) trying to force the club to get a move on and get Masch signed. Not like he has ever placed a piece in the press before to get things moving.

doesn't matter what anyone else wants. I'm sure we have a first option tied up, and that providing we sign up for a certain amount by a certain time frame, he would remain ours.

Even if we didn't actually 'want' him, it would still make sense to sign him up for the option we have and then sell him on for more.

No inside info, but the general gist of the discussions seem be that we paid a chunk for the loan period with a further amount to keep him. could have been 7mil with an addtional 10mil if we decide to keep him, or similar.

Haven't you learned by now that the more people talk the less they actually know?

Oh, and the amount we paid for the loan period is £1.5 million. But that may not interest as you it's a fact and not mindless speculation ...
