Nothing to do with that useless lump Carrick, though was it.

Would be a bit like attributing Chelsea's title the previous year to Carvalho.

Carrick played his part in the team, got some important goals and assists. Of course he was overpriced, but if we had the option of spending £17m on one player and then winning the league, I'd consider it.

Same goes for Carvalho as well, probably more so. He's a better defender then John Terry.

He wasn't the reason they won the League, though. He was just an overhyped player from the season before who they convinced themselves was the replacement for Roy Keane. They'd have won the League without that no-mark and saved themselves the money.

Similarly, Hargreaves (who's probably a better player than Carrick, but untested at Premier League level) is being overhyped because he wasn't quite as sh*t as the other England players (including Carrick) at the world cup last summer. The Bundesliga's crap and Hargreaves hardly stands out in it.

each were vital to theri respective teams picking up that trophy though.

Wrong in both cases. Carvalho's inadequacy was ruthlessly exposed when Terry wasn't fit to play. You're right, however, in that he was wrongly perceived as a key player, whereas he was in fact little more than a passenger.

its good that the managers of both teams can be so blind and wrong in their perceptions of those players.....you should write to Benitez and explain to him exactly how to win the league.....he clearly needs your powerful insights and help.

John. I have a German rumour that I'd like you to confirm.

Do Germans still like to employ a lot of sh*t and p*ss in their sexual escapades? :D

How would I know?

Nonsense. It's not a question of being wrong. It's a question of wasting money. In Chelsea's case, it doesn't even seem to be the manager who makes the transfer decisions.

Then again was Carvalho particularly expensive? Can't remember what his transfer fee was.

I think it was about 18 million.

so would signing Kuyt, bellamy and pennant be a bigger waste of money...combined cost 20 mill = no trophy

Then maybe you should have a word with Rafa. He does seem to waste a lot of money.

How many of the players he bought in last year will leave this summer?

Paul Scholes siad that having Carrick there allowed him a free roll to go forward.

Anyway, what cost for the PL trophy?

I'm not sure about Pennant - what did he cost? But the other two were sound buys. You can't evaluate individual transfers based on trophies won. Trophies won is a measure of the overall management success rate. Transfers are only a small part of that and specific transfers are an even smaller part.

Then maybe you should have a word with Rafa. He does seem to waste a lot of money.

You may have a point (?) But it doesn't alter the fact that Carrick and Carvalho were a waste of money and now Hargreaves is a waste of money - unless he miraculously discovers abilities he never had before, of course. It could just be that the style of play in the Bundesliga was holding him back ;)

There you go. Waste of money!

Exactly, the question is, would they still have won the league if they had spent £8m less and bought Mascherano? Or numerous other cheaper less hyped CMs who would have had the same impact as Carrick

You're mad,John.

Carvalho's class. He's a better player than Terry. The reason they were "exposed" when Terry wasn't fit to play was that useless lump Boulahrouz was played.

Well personally i think if we had bought Zakora as so many on here ridiculed UTD for not doing so...i dont think we would have.

people didnt want mascherano and tevez for the price(and issues) being bandied about....and we needed a summer signing.

so basically carrick fitted the bill, we paid a full price for him and the team which included him delivered.

therefore not a waste of money.

I think you'll find that not many of the players he brings in then ships out again go for less than we paid. Morientes is one, but he's a classy footballer whose game just didn't take to English football so I'll let him off with that one.

We'll make a profit on the likes of Bellamy, Carson and Arbeloa if he moves on as well as is being mooted.
