Shame, just too good to be backup for Reina and not too good to be our first choice

Makes sense really. Not that I want Carson to go as he's a really good young keeper but he's not going to replace Pepe anytime soon and considering Pepe is also rather young for a keeper. At least it will be a pretty good return on our money - must be up their with returns on players bought if he goes for £4m.

lets keep him another year and loan him again. Rather that, then he goes to arsenal and solves their GK problem for the next 10 years.

Makes sense as well, since we already bought that Italian keeper (Padelli?) as backup.

Lehmann has just signed a new contract, so I wouldn't worry on that score.

We should sell him for more...

When we want to buy these type players from small clubs we always get held randsome, Bale Richards costing 10-15m while we are prepared to let Carson go for 4m...

Not saying he's worth 5,6,7,8,9,10-15m but we should play with the market more.

The problem with that is everyone knows we have Reina and everyone knows Carson doesnt want to stay here if hes #2, on the plus side hes on a longish contract i think so we arent forced to sell for a price we arent happy with, i think 5 million would be good business for someone that only cost 750,000 im still not convinced he'll go on to be a top keeper for a top side. Its one thing to stand out in a side like Charlton but as we know the attributes needed to play for a top 4 side are not the same, its much more about concentration and not making ANY mistakes.

Wish him well wherever he goes and hopefully the money we get for him can be used to good effect on the team.

We only paid 750K for him and there might be some kind of a sell-on clause which would mean some dosh for the hard-up Leeds... Which is fair enough because if I remember correctly they were forced to sell a player at that point in order to survive.

He is only in on loan til the end of the season

They are about to buy the Polish #2 keeper

There's talk of 'main rivals' and Arsenal in this thread.

They won't be buying him, he's not that good yet. Those clubs want as near as they can get to a finished article, not a kid learning his trade who's had one season of games, as their 1st choice keeper.

Bolton won't spend that sort of money on a goalkeeper, nor will Everton who have Howard, Blackburn with Friedel, Spurs with Robinson, Newcastle with Given.

So thats 8 clubs off the top of my head who wouldn't be improved by signing carson as their number 1, its a diminishing market and £4 million would be excellent business in those circumstances.

He won't though, for the simple fact that he isn't good enough.

aye

he hated David Seaman for 6 seasons

Young English goalies then....story was when Arsenal were after Dudek it was the board who said no and bought Richard Wright instead, despite Wenger telling them he had big problems with the way young English goalies were trained. He bombed Wright and Stuart Taylor out the club quite quickly after that.

Wenger only ever offers 1 year deals to players over 30.

That's why Pires left

Still means that Lehmans new deal doesn't prevent them from signing a new first choice keeper.

Lehmann's already 37 too, will be 38 in November, so even without that general policy I'd be surprised if he has much more than another year or so in him anyway.

sounds like a total bullschit story to me.

Did the Board insist he bought Francis Jeffers too ?

Can't help feeling that the fact that Wright and Taylor are both not very good is the most significant factor.
