I'm in an argument with a Manc mate of mine, who says that we were "the most boring side on the planet for 20 years",and I'm trying to recall a quote from Tom Finney,or was it Stan Matthews, who essentially said we were the finest side he'd ever seen after we destroyed Forest that time in the 80s.

What was it,can anybody remember?

It was roughly that. Finney was interviewed (by BBC, I think) after that 5-0 win over Forest and said something to the effect that we were the best team he'd ever seen.

That 1987/88 team certainly couldn't be described as 'boring' by any realistic standards. Some of our other teams before and since could arguably be described as such, however - not there's anything wrong with that.

Our late 70s team was often considered boring because they wouldn't let the other team have the ball and used to pass it around for ages without getting an effort in on goal.

If I remember correctly he said something like "It was the finest exhibition of football I´ve ever seen. I´ve seen Brazil play but never with that kind of pace"

It was something like "That was without question the finest exibition of football I've ever seen. I seen football all over the world but never at that pace." He finished it with "and the Mancs are c****"

Seem to remember Platini at the time, making a comment on that game also, along the line s off it been the best performance he'd seen also.

I thought that was the Arsenal game - McMahon winning the ball on the touchline, Beardsley nutmegging Thomas.

If it was Platini then he was probably talking about Forest ;)

That was after the game against Arsenal (2-0) at Anfield the same season. He said something like "I don´t think I would ever see an English team that plays like a continental team. Liverpool played different from Arsenal, they played with players who have good technique, like Barnes, Beardsley, Houghton." Both Finney´s and Platini´s quotes are on the video from Liverpools 87/88 season.

The end response to the "debate":

Well, when you add the sixth star to your crest for next season, don't forget to tell the embroiderers to add 28 coffins as well. Might as well recognise all your European achievments.

I corrected him on the statistic and reminded him of the Palace fan his lot killed.Whiter than white, aren't they all?

Albert Finney said "What I want is a good time. All the rest is propaganda."

And he was right.

Your mate is a c***. What sort of person uses the death of dozens of people to make a snide point in a meaningless discussion?
