nice to see a manager gracious in defeat:

'We won this leg but maybe we were lucky considering the amount of chances they created in the first half.

'We tried everything possible and I am proud of the spirit and effort my players put in.

'They worked hard and tried everything but Liverpool are a difficult team to play against.

'They are strong, direct and are mentally tough. That is the way it goes. Sometimes it is like that in football how ever hard you try.

'I can only congratulate Liverpool, they are a vigorous side and for the neutral it must have been a game full of good attacking football.

'From Liverpool it was a great performance. Their style is very difficult to play against. We tried everything, although we were not at our best.

'We fought to the very last seconds but Liverpool were highly motivated and they defended in such a way to stop us getting close to their goal.

'Anfield is such a difficult place to play in, so we are out, but I was very impressed with the spirit and fight we showed. I now expect to see that for the rest of the season.

'We have Real Madrid now at home this weekend, and I want to see the same level of effort for that one.'

Hmm BBC reported his comments differently:

Rijkaard, now under severe pressure at Barca after seeing his side lose the lead in La Liga on Saturday, offered only grudging praise for Liverpool.

"Liverpool produced a great performance. I do not see it as being progressive, they are very direct while being mentally strong and motivated," said the Dutchman.

"Other teams will not like playing them. With luck they can beat anyone in the competition."

He added: "We won this leg, but maybe we were lucky considering the amount of chances they created in the first half.

"We tried everything possible and I am proud of the spirit and effort my players put in. They worked hard and tried everything, but Liverpool are a difficult team to play against."

Anyway all that matters is we're through.

strange...the times has him being more negative...

"However, it was not enough to impress Frank Rijkaard, the Barcelona coach, who offered Benítez?s team his congratulations but said ?I don?t see Liverpool progressing? on account of their style, which he believes is too defensive. "

He's an odd character Rikkjard. He almost seems clueless at times. I always get the sense he is just waiting and hoping his Superstars actually show up and perfrom rather than him having a game plan.

Others have quoted him as saying 'I'd dont see them as progressive', ie in terms of style

I was surprised by his comments before the game and would think this is a form of apology for those comments. Very Morinhoesque...

Nah, Mourinho would be a c*** before and after the game.

well we were progressive into their goal twice in their own back yard, and only failed to be progressive into their goal by the narrowest of margins on 3-4 occasions last night.

so why should we let old right-guard's tactical analysis bother us?

f*** Rijkaard. He had plenty of s*** to say about Rafa before the game, I don't care how humble he is now.

One day some of these idiots will learn to keep mum about Rafa, he doesn't rise to the bait and the majority of the time makes them look like idiots after the game.

If that's grudging praise I'd love to hear him waxing lyrical.

He's clearly been stung by the reation by the Spanish press (particularly after the 1st leg) when they all, quite correctly, said that Rafa had completely outwitted him tactically.
