RafaShanks Posted January 25, 2007 Posted January 25, 2007 Ex Liverpool Right Back Markus Babbel has decided to retire this summer due to a Knee Injury. Babbel said 'As things look at the moment i can say i'm finished as a footballer. I was always a player everyone excpected to 'deliver', but at the moment i don't have much more to give.' "Sooner or later I want to become a Bundesliga coach and one day I want to make the Champions League" Babbel was playing for VfB Stuttgart in Germany. He was a very important part of the Liverpool team that won the treble in 2000/2001. http://www.liverpool.vitalfootball.co.uk/article.asp?a=48726 Not a huge surprise. Was feckin superb during the treble season. Shame his LFC career was so brief due to injury and then illness, which robbed us/him of a few more seasons to enjoy his talents. All the best for the future Markus. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4g0X15CMS7k
Benitez Posted January 25, 2007 Posted January 25, 2007 Great great player That treble season, he and Gary Mac where right up there as our main men. Kinda funny and sad in a way, that our right back position was deemed cursed, yet in him, Stevie Finnan, and Rob Jones before them both, I've had the pleasure of seeing 3 fantastic right backs play for Liverpool in vaguely recent history. Such a shame what happened to him with his illness, but having read a bit about it at the time Markus was ill, I was just happy he got over it, and credit to him - went on to continue playing. All the best to him!
theredfella Posted January 25, 2007 Posted January 25, 2007 A real shame for a player every Liverpool fan should hold in the highest esteem, for his contributions in the Treble season and for the fact he overcame a terrible, massively debilitating illness to come back and play for us again. Top man.

Bootle Buck Posted January 25, 2007 Posted January 25, 2007 What a class player and a class man. He would have had many a great season at Anfield only for his illness. I would love to see him come back one day to get a great round of applause from the Anfield crowd. It was amazing to think he must have been playing with symptoms from his illness for a while and was still fecking brilliant.
Frosty Jack Posted January 25, 2007 Posted January 25, 2007 (edited) I always thought Ged was a little hasty in writing him off after his recovery from illness. His first full game back, against Villa I think, with Barry beating him quite a few times in the first half......but Markus looked no worse than he did in his first few games for us in 2000. He looked like he was just getting used to the pace again, then Ged substituted him after what was it 30 minutes? He had a tantrum and never really played for us again. He then had a decent enough season at Blackburn. Scored some important goals for us too. We replaced him with Abel Xavier? Edited January 25, 2007 by Negativland
Stevie H Posted January 25, 2007 Posted January 25, 2007 one of my favourite players of recent years. top, top player and a top pro. best of luck to him.
Guest Scot Posted January 25, 2007 Posted January 25, 2007 I love Babbel. In one season he made a bigger impression on me than some do in 10. Retiring 7/7/07?

And his career post Liverpool doesn't suggest GH was hasty.
liverbird04 Posted January 26, 2007 Posted January 26, 2007 He needs Chris de Burgh again. he's suffered enough
MikeK88 Posted January 26, 2007 Posted January 26, 2007 Best of luck in his coaching career, was a great player.
Hodgson for Chelsea Posted January 26, 2007 Posted January 26, 2007 Fantastic player and I expect he will be a fantastic manager too. He was amazing the year we won the treble.
Igors Uncle Dave Posted January 26, 2007 Posted January 26, 2007 I have a great deal of admiration for Marcus. He was a fantastic player and a joy to watch, he had pace and could run form box to box all day. It was a sad time to see him going through his illness and the obvious questions were asked when he returned. he was never the same but I am glad to have seen him return and wear that shirt just one more time. Marcus I wish you and your family all of the very best. Thank you for those wonderful games and goals you gave us
fyds Posted January 26, 2007 Posted January 26, 2007 One of the few players we ever had who's music collection may have interested Dave G. Great player, great fighter and still has friends at the club.
Nathan Explosion Posted January 26, 2007 Posted January 26, 2007 One of the few players we ever had who's music collection may have interested Dave G. Nah - my music collection would have interested him.
kop205 Posted January 26, 2007 Posted January 26, 2007 without turning it into an arugment like, cos I don't think the thread needs it - but Sadly, he never did really get back to where he was, playing wise. And his career post Liverpool doesn't suggest GH was hasty. And there were the rumours that he didn't always look after himself off the pitch as well as he might have done. Still, what a player he was. His goal at Goodison was superb, not many full back capable of doing that, and he notched a few other important ones too as well as being immense at the back. Loved the fella, for that one season he was top class and always came across as one of the lads too, along with Didi.
Ronnie Whelan Posted January 26, 2007 Posted January 26, 2007 He will make a terrific coach, and I would certainly expect to see him coach a side to the CL. It would be great to have him back in Anfield to receive the applause he deserves.
floyd Posted January 26, 2007 Posted January 26, 2007 To shamefully paraphrase Blade Runner about Babbel " The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long?and you have burned so very, very brightly "
RafaShanks Posted January 26, 2007 Author Posted January 26, 2007 Wouldn't it'll be fanastic if the club could organise Markus to come back to Anfield and present him to the fans before kick off for a game.
Herbie von Smalls Posted January 27, 2007 Posted January 27, 2007 very sad news. my favourite non-scouser to join the club since we last won the league. mach's gut, Markus!
hagi_complex Posted January 27, 2007 Posted January 27, 2007 Beast of a player. Running his b******s off in extra-time against Brum is how I'll always remember him.
