Markus Babbel To Retire In The Summer

Ex Liverpool Right Back Markus Babbel has decided to retire this summer due to a Knee Injury.

 

Babbel said 'As things look at the moment i can say i'm finished as a footballer. I was always a player everyone excpected to 'deliver', but at the moment i don't have much more to give.'

 

"Sooner or later I want to become a Bundesliga coach and one day I want to make the Champions League"

 

Babbel was playing for VfB Stuttgart in Germany. He was a very important part of the Liverpool team that won the treble in 2000/2001.

Not a huge surprise. Was feckin superb during the treble season. Shame his LFC career was so brief due to injury and then illness, which robbed us/him of a few more seasons to enjoy his talents.

Great great player :cool: That treble season, he and Gary Mac where right up there as our main men.

 

Kinda funny and sad in a way, that our right back position was deemed cursed, yet in him, Stevie Finnan, and Rob Jones before them both, I've had the pleasure of seeing 3 fantastic right backs play for Liverpool in vaguely recent history.

 

Such a shame what happened to him with his illness, but having read a bit about it at the time Markus was ill, I was just happy he got over it, and credit to him - went on to continue playing.

 

All the best to him!

A real shame for a player every Liverpool fan should hold in the highest esteem, for his contributions in the Treble season and for the fact he overcame a terrible, massively debilitating illness to come back and play for us again. Top man.

What a class player and a class man. He would have had many a great season at Anfield only for his illness. I would love to see him come back one day to get a great round of applause from the Anfield crowd. It was amazing to think he must have been playing with symptoms from his illness for a while and was still fecking brilliant.

I always thought Ged was a little hasty in writing him off after his recovery from illness. His first full game back, against Villa I think, with Barry beating him quite a few times in the first half......but Markus looked no worse than he did in his first few games for us in 2000. He looked like he was just getting used to the pace again, then Ged substituted him after what was it 30 minutes? He had a tantrum and never really played for us again. He then had a decent enough season at Blackburn. Scored some important goals for us too.

 

We replaced him with Abel Xavier?

I love Babbel. In one season he made a bigger impression on me than some do in 10.

I have a great deal of admiration for Marcus. He was a fantastic player and a joy to watch, he had pace and could run form box to box all day. It was a sad time to see him going through his illness and the obvious questions were asked when he returned. he was never the same but I am glad to have seen him return and wear that shirt just one more time.

 

Marcus I wish you and your family all of the very best. Thank you for those wonderful games and goals you gave us

And there were the rumours that he didn't always look after himself off the pitch as well as he might have done.

 

Still, what a player he was. His goal at Goodison was superb, not many full back capable of doing that, and he notched a few other important ones too as well as being immense at the back. Loved the fella, for that one season he was top class and always came across as one of the lads too, along with Didi.
