Valencia step up Reina hunt

Valencia are reported to have stepped up their bid to strike a deal for Liverpool number one Jose Reina.

The Spanish international is being strongly linked with a move to La Mestalla, but coach Rafa Benitez has insisted he intends to hand his number one a new contract.

However, with Marco Amelia's agent claiming the Italian is wanted by Liverpool - it seems to be adding weight to the reports that Reina could be departing.

Reina's agent Manuel Garcia Quilon has revealed that talks with Liverpool and Valencia are set to commence.

"There is an offer for Liverpool to follow," he told skysports.com.

"But the kid has some questions."

Reina's partner is due to give birth in March and is understandably concerned about the prospect of moving his young family.

Valencia's sporting director Amadeo Carboni is understood to have initiated the contact between the two clubs.

However, it is also believed that although Valencia are looking to broker an early deal - it would be with a view to a summer move, rather than in January.

Unless he could be used as a make weight in a deal for a.n. other Valencia player?

Reina is one of our most important players ~ every bit as important as Gerrard, Alonso and Carragher.

So I very much doubt it.

Why on earth would we want to get rid of Pepe in any circumstance?

Really, really important for the way we play. Too important to let go i would imagine.

What I don't understand is why we haven't just told Valencia not to bother making an offer.

Or perhaps we have and they aren't listening?

Rafa clearly loves Pepe, there's not a chance of us selling him.

Not likely. Besides, if they ask nicely, we'll let them take Salif.

Really don't see the problem. I like Reina as a keeper, but I really don't see him as the best around. If we get a decent fee, og use him as trade value, and get in a new keeper, less error prone, well then fine by me.

Not that I don't like or support Reina, it's just that, he is not indispensible...

OK, name a keeper who would suit our style and the way we play, that would be available instead of Reina?

Sure we are loaded, or will be soon by all accounts, but money is not always what interests people. If Valencia were really interested in Pepe and we were really interested in Villa i wonder if rafa would consider it?

Wow, you're hard to please. The number of 'errors' he makes are very few and the way he plays in our system clearly outweigh such iundiscretions. I wouldn't swap him with any keeper at all.

I'm with you Mark - really not sure how we'd replace Pepe. I'd love to see Villa here but not if we have to let Reina go to get him.

Incidentally people seem to be conveniently ignoring the fact that Villa quite publically f*cked us off to go to Valencia and made clear he didn't fancy England.

what keeper anywhere makes no errors? i can't think of too many that have made less than pepe in the last 18 months - and most of his were in an 8 or 10 game spell. outside of that he's hardly put a foot wrong. he's a top class keeper who will be badly missed should we lose him imo.

I think the only way it would happen is if Reina asked for a move. Rafa really seems to rate him and, as previous posters have said, he suits our style of play perfectly.

He is extremely quick off his line, which helps negate our centre backs relative lack of pace and his distribution is outstanding.

Come on now - I'm sure if Agger makes a few errors he'll be equally harsh...
