I'm not saying that we will be spending money like drunken sailors like Chelsea. I wouldn't want that anyway because it is horribly obscene. But, the truth is that if this takeover goes through, we will have increased spending power, and a far bigger economic base to work with because of the new stadium. We'll be operating sensibly, but we will have a whole new crop of players to be in the market for, like never before.

So, based on what we have now, what positions would we fill, at reasonable prices, and who would we want to get?

I'm not talking about silly season purchases, but realistic purchases of the best quality. Just like we used to habitually do in the 70's and 80's (Dalglish, Barnes, Beardsley etc).

My personal opinion is this. I'd like us to get help at LB, CB, CM, RM, LM, and F

Not to turn over the whole team, but to replace Zenden, Pennant, Kewell, Auerelio and maybe Crouch, to get a good back-up and ultimate replacement for Finnan, and to get a top, top CB for overall strength.

Over the next year, I'd love us to get:

LB: Don't know

CB: Don't know

RB: Alves

CM: Hargreaves

RM: Ribery

LM: Schweinsteiger

F: Don't know (really not convinced on any of the Spanish lads and Henry just ain't going to happen)

Opinions?

Somebody who is going to draw all the attention away from Alonso and Gerrard. Alonso in particular, if a team is more concerned with nullifying a high profile forward..well the trade off is going to be Xabi with free reign to pass the ball where and how he likes.

I know what you mean about Hargreaves, but he is so amazingly versatile. Plus, he works his b*llocks off. There is always someone who is injured. He could fill in right across the midfield. We could use him right now actually, and this isn't an unusual occurrence for us.

Rafa's quote about being able to compete "at the top end of the marker" is very exciting indeed...

Don't think we need Hargreaves. Get a young and/or experienced CM for backup.

Alves is a cert, unless Chelsea nab him.

We defo need a new LB, but who - i'm not sure. What do you call that lad from Wigan?

If Alves is bought as a RB, then we need a new RW and a LW.

Cover at centre back (Upson?) and goalkeeper.

Up front is the most interesting. Torres perhaps?

EVERYONE. Lets just f***ing buy everyone and b****x to the rest of them.

Oh sorry. Kenyon moment.

Nope. That would be crass, not in tune with our history, and not to mention fiscally irresponsible.

That's why I wanted to be realistic from both standpoints. We DO have more spending power. We WON'T be fiscally irresponsible.

We will buy more players. We do have to improve.

Why am I telling you this pal. You know this already!! :P

Total overkill. We already have three great centrebacks. There's just no need whatsoever to invest in a new one.

If we buy alves, we won't need a rightwinger either, with Alves, Pennant, Gerrard, Garcia as options on the right side of midfield (momo needs games as well, so I can well imagine gerrard getting some games on the right) and Finnan and Alves at rightback.

Kewell, Gonzalez, Garcia, even with kewell's injury problems, represent a strong enough force for me on the left. Particularly if we invest in a leftback that would be properly competitive to Riise, enabling him to be used at left midfield as well.

A striker, a central midfielder (I doubt hargreaves would be content to be fourth choice) and maybe a leftback (jury is still out on Aurelio for me) is all we'd need to look at.

Nolan would be my choice as a CM. Local Liverpool fan, wouldn't demand to start every game, can play RM as well.

First choice for his present club, on the brink of the England squad, one of the most consistent performers in the Premiership and he wouldn't want to be playing every week?

Something wrong with him if he didn't.

I think a player like Barton would be more inclined to come, would fit in better in regards to what kind of player we need and also more realistic to spend money on as a fourth choice, even if it is a bit indulgent to splash cash on a young english player for the job.

Alves, Lahm, Barton, Kaka' and Torres.

Though that's a small fortune.

To Maktoum, it's like taking his empty pop bottles back for the weekend, and spending them on a 1/4 of Sports Mixtures and a packet of Space Dust.

Bartons neither good enough or in posession of the right attitude. He's a thug.

Lahm is a great shout, and with Alves on the other side we'd have a real attacking threat from both fullback positions.

David Villa would be excellent although maybe Torres has more of the right attributes to cope in the premiership.

A solid squad player to cover the central midfield would be handy too.

Don't see why the three above players are unrealistic if DIC come in. Surely they'll be eager to create a positive impression straight away and assuage any negative feeling towards their investment.

Bribery usually works well.

Barton would be the Momo stand-in though, which we lack. We could use him and Stevie on unfootballing drivel like Bolton for a start.

Kaka' is type of player we need overall. An attacking No.10 creative ball-carrying force.

I disagree that hargreaves would just be an automatic fourth choice. We'll always have someone out injured. He can play on the left or right. Stevie might be on the right at times. We could go with three in the middle (Hargreaves in front of the back four with one forward)

I just think he could be a great contributor.

I've watched the Bundesliga for many years and I don't think Hargreaves has any near the quality nor talent as Sissoko, Gerrard or Alonso.

I have also watched the Bundesliga for several years and i totally aagree with you about Hargreaves.
