Tactical change at corners by Rafa

Not seen Carra where he is now when we have a corner before.

he done it for a bit last season. he should have scored on saturday but completely missed the ball, just before Kuyt got his second

I thought for a min he was gonna score there, would have loved that.

Rafa did say the other year that he should be scoring two or three goals a season, that was part of his game that he wanted him to improve on.... I wonder if he told him what goal to attack

Shame Sami didn't get the goal his game deserved. That screamer that his the pole behind the goal was a cracking effort for a centre back - they're all trying to out do Agger.

I've noticed Sami often 'invisibly' getting forward to support the attack recently - the nod down to Kuyt for the goal against Villa...roaming forward and popping up in the box against Bordeaux. Really catches a few out.

Gerrard needs to be in the box, or on the edge of the box with Riise. Most here who actually have followed Gerrards career know that the bugger is great at headers, and would definitely add more bite to our corners.

Pennant took some pretty decent ones the other day. And Gerrard even got on the end of one of them (Zenden or Pennant's?). That is where he should be, in and around the box.

Another point to note, I think we really missed Agger's ability to take the ball out and make runs with the ball and incisive passes from the back on Saturday. Reading just backed off us and gave our two center backs so much time and space. Agger would have had a field day. Mind you they might have played differently if Daniel was on the pitch.

carra in the six yard box is a brilliant idea. just his presence there, shouting and making a nuisance of himself, will make room for crouch, sami and kuyt.

What was Dudek doing behind the goal? :D I'll get me coat!!

Kuyt's better off at the far post and Crouch attacking the corner and moving, coz if Crouch just stands still, he's bound to "foul" someone as he stumbles to try to head the ball.

When he's moving, it's almost impossible for defenders to legally stop him winning the flick-on if he does get to the ball. When he's standing, defenders just uses their bodies against him and Crouch would have to get over them to head the ball and the ref would just blow for the foul

They were offering little in attack too, so we could afford to get fwd a bit more.

Next tactical change - stop Gerrard feckin taking them

he isnt

Pennant takes a decent corner an all, as does Bellamy. It's nice having more corner / set piece takers now to spread the load! We've actually scored a few goals from corners this season

Stevie's not been on corner duty that much recently has he?

and we've started scoring form 'em ;)

Makes sense in so many ways tho, cos Gerrard is a good headererererer of the ball, and is big, and is more of a danger in the box, better to have short arses like Pennant and Bellamy take 'em.

Was just thinking about that at the weekend - I was watchign the CL final on ESPN Classic (again...) and his headed goal really was a beauty. For such a big lad, he scores very few of them of late - I gues sit's down to him prowling the edge of the box at corners or takign them himself, instead of attacking the ball in the box.

A timehounoured tradition. Don't recall who (Smith? Neal?) who was talking the European Cup campaigns and he mentioned how they had got a few goals from the tactic of telling the centrebacks to stay up front and support the attack when they moved forward.

Carra was up for corners for most of last seasons home games.

And nearly scored at Brum away, too, if one of them blokes didn't handball it off the line and got sent off. Remembered jumping up and down my couch thinking Carra's finally scored

Makes it easier when the opposition bring everyone back for a corner.

Was a time when you'd have to leave two players back to watch the one/two players loitering by the halfway line.

Furthest player back recently has been Riise and he's only been 30 yards from goal waiting to unleash a rocket.

I don't mean him staying up front from corners, free kicks etcd - but just popping up inside the box or even on the flanks during the normal course of play - it's something Albelda used to do at Valencia and is bloody difficult for defenders to pick up on.

That's what I am talking about as well.

He takes quite a number and some games 70 percent of those he takes don't go past the first man. I agree with those that say Gerrard should be in the penalty area for corners.
