I think it boils down to the underlying problem of just how disenchanted people are generally, because of the wider problems at the club. This comes out in every discussion, be it transfers/tactics/managers - many people are coming from a negative standpoint on every subject, because they are currently so fed up.

Hodgson's reputation is that of a rigid cautious manager too, so I wouldn't expect him to try to change the team philosophy frankly. I also think moving Gerrard back could actually harm our ball retention (Cole gives it away a hell of a lot in Gerrard's 'old' position), although clearly that depends on who else is played around him

Although he was signed on a free, so can't really be compared to the likes of Stewart/Babb/Diouf where we spunked millions

Always thought that world cup showed just how good Paul McGrath was - at his age then, with no knees, he absolutely carried Babb and made him look so good we coughed up 3.6m for him. The signings of Scales and Babb in the space of a few days was the precursor to 3 at the back with Ruddock or Wright in the middle of the 3.

Absolutely, but what it means is that when he is called upon he has relatively little in game experience

According to Wiki (yes I know) he has only played 76 games in 9 years for Boro - which means he was too s*** to get in their team and is not particularly experienced either. Really do not see the point.

And claiming the reason as being he is fed up of being third choice keeper. For the world cup by my reckoning he was about 5th choice...

IF we sign Cole, he's not good enough to play in the middle so he ends up being yet another wide player with no pace. Other than he's free, English and a BiG NAmE I don't see how he adds to the balance of the first XI with what we currently have - and with the wages he'll be on we won't want him on the bench.

No - it's tabloid radio alright references to the S*n, when it's frequented by countless Reds and ex-Reds are quite unnecessary however

What Souness did give, forced by circumstances (the injuries due to his training methods and Phil Boersma), was a lot of young players a very early chance of first team football all at the same time. We struggled at times because of it, but Evans felt the benefit of it when he took over and the players were that much older and more experienced (yet still coming into their prime). Am thinking of Fowler, McManaman, Redknapp, Jones, Hutchison, James, Harkness, Matteo, Marsh etc - some obviously achieved more than others!
