Germany look good going forward when they can get those fast exchanges down the left wing, but Turkey nullified that threat a lot of the time last night, sticking Kazim-Richards close to Lahm, and leaving the likes of Friedrich, Metzelder and Mertesacker to distribute the ball from the back. The next problem they faced last night was with Ballack playing in a more advanced position and Aurelio following him, and the early lack of Frings in central midfield, the pairing of Rolfes and Hitzlsperger looked woefully out of their depth when it came to orchestrating things in midfield - Ayhan and especially Hamit Altintop bossed them. This meant that they couldn't get the ball in between the likes of Podolski, Ballack and Lahm enough to play those quick exchanges... aside from the goals. Basically, Germany have one weapon (set pieces aside) - the combination of Podolski and Lahm down the left, with Ballack operating as a point of reference for one-twos, etc. Without that, Germany's attacking game is f***ed - they're stilted and laboured, as Turkey forced them into being last night. Let them have the ball in deep central areas, and force play towards their right where Schweinsteiger is isolated by playing ahead of the limited Friedrich.
