Local rags... Echo Then it got worse. After being goaded with the despicable Heysel taunts for 70 uninterrupted minutes, Liverpool fans responded by reviving their Munich songs. Off and on the pitch, this was a shameful day. Post The day's misery wasn't just confined to the pitch. Despite commendable efforts by both clubs to defuse the tedious animosity between these North West giants, United supporters in the Premiership record crowd of 75,828 were unwilling to entertain the notion and launched into non-stop Heysel 'murderer' chants which eventually, after an hour's play, goaded Liverpool's following into the inevitable Munich-related riposte. In a week when it was revealed there are more supporters from Manchester United under banning orders than any other club, it perhaps wasn't the best time for their darker side to emerge once more. Liverpool's support, too, was ultimately guilty of stooping to that same level. This was as spiteful an atmosphere as has been heard at this fixture in years and unless more drastic action is taken, it's a question of when and not if matters become seriously ugly.
