  1. Serginho...
  2. This story is a year old.
  3. For the English among us, part of the enjoyment in watching the excellent World Cup stories on BBC2 has been all the old commentary, particularly David Coleman.
  4. When did Ecuador stop being Equador? I think we should be told.

I don't think anyone deserves to be that unlucky. Having said that, I'm sure we'll sell him in January. In fact, I'm sure the deal has already been agreed. He'll be back playing by November.
  6. It'd take £7m. That would give us £1m extra to spend on the second striker after we've bought the first one...
  7. Tony Yeboah, Wimbledon v Leeds 95-96. Not long after the one he scored against us, he won the ball in midfield, moved it forward past a defender by bouncing it off his knee, then as it fell he volleyed it in from outside the area. Matt Le Tisser, Blackburn v Southampton 94-95. To quote Radio Five, so good even the Blackburn fans applauded. Steven Reid, Wigan v Blackburn 05-06. I think everyone who has ever played football has wanted to hit it as hard as he did right into the top corner!!
  8. Italy. With Shevchenko or Podolski as top goalscorer.
  9. It was dull!
  10. You have to admit, that was very dull!
  11. This content is not viewable to guests.
  12. Probably one of the best renditions of You'll Never Walk Alone was on Wednesday, April 19 1989 in Italy.
  13. Quality! Thanks.
  14. I think somebody should make up a website that deals with Liverpool's history. Not facts and stats, but a feel for the club. The essentials. The Essential Liverpool History. That's what it should be called. Then we wouldn't have people saying Shankley (I'm not having a go in this case, it's just prompted me to say all this!!) and we wouldn't have people asking where a 1965 FA Cup final pic was from - it'd all be on that website and we could all enjoy it and contribute and learn from it. I'm not doing it, like.
  15. This has just become ridiculous, and revealed a shocking lack of basic intelligence and understanding in some people who should know better. The point is this - for someone who scores 30+ goals a season and is regularly involved in cup finals and semi-finals and major tournaments, why is it that Thierry Henry has such a poor goalscoring record in those games? I want to know why. Do you know why? Does anyone know why? And the point is that until he does that, he cannot be regarded as a truly great player. Merely a very, very good one. But he is NOT the man for big occasion, which is what Maradona, Platini, Pele, Ronaldo and Zidane are, the players people are too readily comparing him with. The likes of Owen, Hughes and Gerrard - for those so STUPID to not be able to understand my original point - are players who might not have the raw talent of Henry, but almost always deliver on the big occasion, and are therefore more useful on the big occasion than someone who promises much but delivers little. I want somebody to prove me otherwise. But nobody has yet. Only Henry can. Which I'm sure will soon be a pressing concern of his
  16. You are making yourself look silly now. No-one in the world reckons Brehme or Tardelli are true footballing greats. The point is that Henry will never ever ever ever ever be regarded alongside the likes of Ronaldo and Zidane (to name two of his peers) in 100 years time unless he starts to leave his mark on the grandest occasions. When players are very good, that is what makes the difference between being very good and great. I don't really see what the problem with that is. My original point was that if Gerrard and Henry were on the same team in a big match, I'd expect Gerrard to score, not Henry, going on all the evidence I have presented. Oh, and as for Best. He scored in a European Cup final and was an undoubted genius despite playing in nowhere near as many big games as Henry. You proved my own point there. Henry is not even fit to lace Best's boots - yet. Well, when he was alive anyway.
  17. Here are some more facts: In 14 games that were either finals or semi-finals for Arsenal, he has scored just one goal - against Lens in 2000 UEFA Cup semi-final. He also scored in 1998 Champions League semi-final for Monaco v Juventus but the tie was already lost by that point. For someone who scores so many goals for his club, don't you think that he should have scored a LOT more in those 14 games than one goal? That is what my point is. He is a very good player - but WHY does he not seem to score in these major games? It's not like he hasn't had enough goes at it. This is why, until he does, he won't be Pele or Maradona or all those others. Really, whoever said Henry is as good as Maradona is making themselves look stupid. Oh, and for France you forgot these: World Cup 2002 - 2 games, no goals, one sending off Euro 2004 - 4 games, 2 goals Incidentally, I feel the same thing about Ronaldinho. He's not even in the same league as Ronaldo yet, but he has plenty of time to prove otherwise.
  18. I'd rather this hadn't got into a us v them situation. My statements would be the same no matter who he played for. I'd love Henry to play for Liverpool. He would score loads of goals. But I would be expecting the likes of Gerrard or someone else to deliver on the biggest occasion, rather than Henry. Let us reassess this after the World Cup and see how he does there.
  19. No. They are not the big occasions though. They were second round, quarter-final games. I am talking semi-finals, finals, major international tournaments. Euro 2000 is the only time he has done anything in any of those. Players are ultimately remembered for what they do on the very, very biggest stages. Look at the names of all the truly great players and they have done it in World Cups, European Cup finals and to a lesser degree European Championships - Pele, Maradona, Cruyff, Beckenbauer, Best and more recently Ronaldo and so on. No-one is disputing Henry is a very good player. But the true greats do it at the highest of levels, and he hasn't done enough of that yet to convince me. But then again I am a very demanding football supporter who has seen a lot and takes a lot of persuading to be impressed - many on here are the Premiership generation and to them Henry really is one of the best players ever.
  20. I know which one would most probably score. My point is that Henry does not do it in the big games. And that is something you are either born with, or you aren't. He isn't.
  21. I am not arguing the fact whether he is a good player or not. But the truly great players leave their mark on the biggest occasions. I want you to name me a semi-final or final or major tournament where he has performed. I recognise his achievement at Euro 2000, but given all the other occasions in his career - and there are a lot - he just does not do it. My point is that if I had to choose one player for a final between Gerrard and Henry, it'd be Gerrard. Owen and Henry? It'd be Owen.
  22. That wasn't my point though, was it?
  23. A while ago I put forward a notion that Thierry Henry was a very good player, but not a great player. The reason for this was because I do not believe him to be a big-game player. I then gave some facts, and although a couple of people agreed with me, most just laughed me off. Having had the chance to witness first hand the contributions of Steven Gerrard and Thierry Henry in cup finals in the same week, would anyone argue against Gerrard being the greater man for the big occasion? Michael Owen, Mark Hughes and Ian Rush are other examples of this type of player. But Henry, though very good, is not.
  24. He's right - how dare they go to supporters!
  25. The Observer thing is voted each week by supporters of their own teams. Arsenal fans give marks out of 10 for Arsenal players and so on... that's why there are three Everton players in there. They give them ridiculous marks - Evertonians I know think Hibbert hasn't been all that great, and Yobo's missed nearly half a season!
