I actually thought that Rafas absence made a difference in that we didnt quite adapt to the different conditions of 11 v 10. Until the sending off, our main attacking tactic was to keep the wingers wide to isolate their centre backs (Djorou in particular) and then play it in behind them for Keane or Gerrard to run on to (see the goal and other "hoofs" such as the one in the first half where Keane had to lay it off for Gerrard to shoot tamely). After the sending off, their back four defended deeper leaving no room for those balls, and we didnt seem to come up with any tactics to counter this. With Rafa there, he probably would have given clearer instructions (not sure it would have helped though, see Hull and the likes).
