We have been 5 results away from Chelsea, or thereabouts.

At the start of the season we had a run of games where a bit of luck (or a more balanced squad) would have seen us turn draws into wins.

Looking back, which 5 draws/losses were we closest to turning into wins and could have seen us neck and neck with Chelsea?

sorry but this is daft

the facts are that in any normal season we would still be in with a chance

Chelsea have been unbelievably consistent which has won them the league

Birmingham City both home and away for starters... Didn't we score an Own Goal in both games? theres 4 points we could have had.

I think it's a game we could have drawn without certain illnesses, and less mistakes, which could be down to squad balance etc, i still don't think it was a 4-1 game, just as us putting a few past Fuloham wasn't a fair reflection.

I know that, I don't think they'll match that points total next season and we'll be in with a shout. I'm not looking to find fault with this season, i'm delighted with what we've achieved. Its just that, for arguments sake, for discussion (remember that ? ;) ) I can't remember which games we were closest to grabbing all points in.

fair enough

but surely, in theory, we could have done better in all of the games we drew/lost...

Middlesborough away really stands out for me, we battered them (well Stevie did almost single handedly) and it still finished 0-0. Man U away gives me nightmares as well, that last minute winner was a real choker.

If Chelsea can be beaten both home and away, it reduces their points total by six points and increases ours by six. So, if we finish on 82 points and they get 97 we'll be 15 points behind. However, had we beat them home and away we'd be on 88 and they'd be on 91. Meaning that we could need as little as 9/10 extra points to win the league next season not 15 but it's all hypothetical nonsense, I suppose.

Chavs record against us, Mancs and a***:

P6 W5 L1 PTS15

Our record against Chavs, Mancs and a***:

P6 W1 D1 L4 PTS4

This is only a point more than we got in the corresponding fixtures last season.

We need to improve on this big time next season.

We've already proved we can do the Mancs and Chavs in the FA cup ;)

Brum Home, Man Utd Away, Arsenal Away, Chelsea Away and Also probably Fulham Away

I think it's possibly daft but for different reasons. My spurs mate said to me that if Liverpool hadn't had that blip mid-season we'd be right up there. I just said to him that the reason we had the blip was simply because we're not good enough to be right up there. it wasn't some magic thing that happened.

Chelsea have done this twice in a row noe. before that arsenal went a whole season unbeaten and another season unbeaten away from home and the mancs have racked up 91points when they could afford to ease off.

These whopping points totals are here to stay. We've got to step up.

I?m not sure about the five games business but every season you always have a couple of games that you look back on and feel peeved with results.

For me this season it?s been:

Charlton Away, Birmingham Home and Man U away?..

The thing is there's no point stressing over it because if you?re honest with yourself the team have probably picked up points when maybe they didn?t deserve it, I?m sure it all evens its self out....

Too right, that was a draw at most, with the worst man of the match performance I've ever seen, by Dogbreath

Birmingham Away (+2 points)

Birmingham Home (+2 points)

Man Utd Away (+1 point for draw)

Charlton Home (+2 points)

Arsenal Away (+1 point for draw)

That would still leave behind Chelsea but those are the games where I think we definitely "dropped" points we could / should have taken.

I always think that at times you can point to a single event or instance which makes and shapes a season.

For me at least last year in the League (and only in the league) I knew we wouldn't make 4th when Stevie missed that penalty against Spurs. If that had gone in we'd have eneded up finish 4th.

For me this year in the league it was Cisse's miss against United. If that goes in, who knows. We were never likely to win the league really, but it could have been us chasing down Chelsea, and we'd be ahead of United now.

For me our 5 most important games that got away from us were.

Brum home and away, Charlton home and away and the United game at Old Trafford.

I'm tempted to say Boro away, but first games of the season are always strange and difficult to call.

This would be my first choice too. It seems impossible we didn't batter them six or seven nil, based on the chances (as you say, primarily from Stevie) that went just wide, hit the post/bar, were cleared off the line, hit defenders butts - a completely one-sided game. Man United away and home too, Birmingham home. I pick these four as I don't believe we did anything wrong in these games other than piss off Lady Luck. They should have, on any normal day in a non-parallel universe have netted us a further 10 points.

To win the League you need to beat your closest rivals

We got 1 point from the 4 games involving Chelski and Manure. A home win and away draw against both would have the log looking like this

Liverpool 37 games 86 pts

Chelsea 36 games 86 pts

Manure 36 Games 75 pts

You can always expect to lose a few games you shouldn't, but it's critical to take pts from your rivals as they count double.

exactly. during the course of a season you drop points against teams you've battered - chelsea have done it, the mancs have done it. Equally we've won games (particularly away) where we haven't played well.

It's our form against our rivals, and our london form that we need to improve.
