What a strange appointment. Ireland should have re-hired Mick McCarthy. They played their best ever football with Mick at the helm. And now they go and give a novice the job! Good luck Stan, you'll need it.

This is all but confirmed now.

It was O'Neill or nobody.

Bit of a mockery because Stan won't have the FAI's full unqualified support unless he defies expectations and does exceptionally well. The realpolitik of this situation is that Stan/Robson is an interim appointment until O'Neill sorts out his future and joins Manchester United/A.N. Other/Ireland (on the very very off-chance).

Christ Almighty. That's all I've to say on the matter.

Yeah, I'd like a piece of that too.

What a laughable collection of scrotumtighteningly idiotic and gutless spanners they are. The cowardice required for people to think that such a blindly stupid appointment will be mistaken for bravery is quite simply breathtaking.

102 caps, 3 World Cups, league title, various Cups and 4 months as assistant manager at Walsall.... How more qualified do you need be??

Sounds like Delaney is taking the cheap option... Imagine the Irish manager is probably gonna be paid less than him!!

I'd take Aldo ahead of Stan if given the choice. Belief has been buggered

I wouldn't mind if it was just Stanford on his tobler, as I thought it was going to be when I caught a bit of the news last night ? let the man make his mistakes or make a name for himself and good luck to him ? but I wake up to find that Bobby Bleeding Robson is in on the act as well, to rage against the night on Merrion Square's tab.

The FAI's Ununderstandability Policy Section has been raking in the overtime on this one.

Can someone tell me what the point of sacking Kerr was now?

His insistence on letting Stephen Carr skip all the friendlies and then dropping Finnan when Carr decided to turn up for the qualifiers - that was a good enough reason to sack him i.m.o.

Did we really have the depth of talent to leave a CL winner sit on the bench for the big games ?

And of course Carr then showed how committed he was to the cause by retiring before he reached 30.

public opinion does not seem too favourable,

Of course it's not going to be too favourable, given that so much of the opinions are being elicited from Manu/Roy Keane fans. Staunton [ and Quinn ] came in for so much implied criticism from Keane, post-Saipan, that most of these k**bheads will hold that against him and be calling for his dismissal before he even starts in the job.

No-one should really begrudge Stan a crack at it seeing as nobody else wants the job and (all bow during these three words) Martin O'Neill is still unavailable; I'm all in favour if any of the supporters of Team FAI want to march on Merrion Square to protest the chickenschit, falling-between-two-stools joint-manager farce, though.

Seems like Kevin MacDonald will be Stan's coach. Their time at Liverpool didn't overlap to any great extent, did it?

Interesting appointment´if true.

He appears to be his right-hand man.

Reports are, though, that Bobby Robson wanted his own fellow with him. What a f***ing mess. My heart goes out to Team FAI supporters, it really does.

Why no official statement till Monday?

On what planet does being a player-coach at Wallsall qualify you to be the manager of an international side? Delaney's insistance that a top class manager would be brought in to replace Kerr was patently bulls*** if this is what the FAI have come up with.

I believe Delaney's words were ?either a top-class manager or a close personal friend of mine?. Cut him some slack.

Sorry. I must have missed that last part of the press conference.
