just watching the Leicester v Ospreys game in the Heineken Cup yesterday and it was interesting the way the dynamic of the game changed in the last 5 or so minutes of the game due to the bonus points scoring system

[Four points are awarded for a win and two points for a draw. A bonus point is awarded for a loss by seven points or fewer, or for scoring four tries or more]

Leicester leading 29-19 heading for 4pts Ospreys nothing

then Ospreys kick a pen and it's 29-22 and Ospreys are in bonus point territory for a loss of 7pts but can also now draw the match with a converted try and so are going for it

Leicester turn the ball over and score a break away try 34-22 and suddenly they are another try away from getting a bonus point so they are going for it

they then score the 4th try in the last few seconds and secure the extra point

was good stuff

made me wonder whether we could improve on the 3pts for a win 1 for a draw system ?

the equivalent of the above would be 4pts for a win, 2 for a draw, 1pt for a defeat by only 1 goal (maybe make it so you have to score e.g.2-1 not a 1-0) and a bonus point for scoring 4 goals

dunno if that's exactly right for footy but fresh from the success of sorting out the future of European football i thought i'd throw this one out there

what say you?

If your intention's to seperate teams with similar results on the basis of who scored more goals or conceeded fewest, is that not what Goal Difference is already for?

my intention was to see if anyone had any weird and wacky ideas as to how the goal/point scoring system might realistically be tweaked to enhance the game

how about like in Basketball where an accumulation of fouls leads to a penalty shot

would stop (ot at least more adequately punish) the likes of Stoke sharing out their fouls

That works fine in as high a scoring game as basketball. In a low scoring game like football, that penalty could end up being decisive in a huge proportion of the games in which it is applied. Not something I'd be keen on, especially given how inconsistent referees are in deciding what is and isn't a foul within the same game, never mind across several games.

You should automatically win a penalty if you field a player aged 40 or over. But he has to take it.

I like this !

a player scoring with his unfavoured foot gets a bonus goal

Riise should get a double bonus goal for scoring with his right!

Penalty takers get an extra goal if they point to the place they're going to put it.

They can do it without pointing, for one point and they get nothing if they point at the wrong place.

If a team hits the woodwork three times in a half, they get to bring on an extra player for the rest of that half.

If a game is still 0-0 with 10 minutes to go, teams can remove players. The aim being if it is still 0-0 at full time then the team with the fewest players wins 1-0.

These are all great.

If a team is out of substitutions and their keeper is injured, then they have to get someone from their fans to replace the keeper*

The guest player can play in any position, up to the manager to choose who goes in goal

The opposing team should get to choose the fan though.

To encourage accurate passing football you get an extra goal if every member of the team touches the ball during a passing move that results in a goal being scored (opposition players must not touch the ball during this period of time).

You score an extra goal on top of that if all passes made during the move were one-touch.
