Ultras targeted Liverpool fansThu, 21 Oct 14:08:48 2010

Italian police have admitted gangs of Napoli's hardcore Ultra fans went out hunting Liverpool supporters to attack in the city on Wednesday night.

There were a number of incidents ahead of the club's Europa League match at the Stadio San Paolo on Thursday night, which resulted in five English people - two of whom were stabbed - and one Italian being taken to hospital. Their injuries were not deemed to be serious and all were discharged after receiving treatment but it has prompted police to step up security ahead of the game.

"Ultras went out seeking English fans, absolutely," said Filippo Bonfiglio, head of DIGOS, the local department which deals with terrorism and political activity.

"There are groups of violent supporters here in Naples so we could hypothesise something like this would happen but it was impossible to prevent every attack everywhere."

There were three arrests made after the attacks on Wednesday night and police recovered an array of weapons and Ultra paraphernalia from the home of one.

Among the weapons seized were a baseball bat, several five-foot long aluminium bars with numerous strategically-placed screws protruding and a six-foot wooden plank.

what the f*** is wrong with these people? it's a frigging football match FFS.

The Italians have been getting away with the English problem for decades.

THREE Liverpool FC fans caught up in violence in Naples were today named.

Ian Friar, 44, from Huyton, Philip Alexander Phillips, 53, from Netherton and Luke Watson, 27 were targeted by yobs in the Italian port city last night.

Mr Phillips and Mr Watson were taken to hospital with injuries not described as life-threatening.

Today Liverpool FC reissued their advise to fans, urging them: "Following a number of widely reported incidents in Naples on Wednesday night that have resulted in some Liverpool fans requiring medical treatment, Liverpool FC would like to advise all travelling supporters to be careful, stick together and heed the safety advice provided with your match ticket.

There was more after the game as far as I know. We got out 10 mins before the end (i know), thus avoiding the hold back.

The police escort to the holding area at the port was a joke apparently, just dumped everyone there surrounded by Ultras to walk back to the Centre/Hotels, so there was more aggro and I think stabbings near Piazza Garbaldi.

Regardless of the football ther
