i think wenger's right this season in that a much lower points total is going to win it since the top 8 or 9 sides are all really capable of beating each other this term. i don't rule us out of it but it's a massive long shot. we need to start playing far better than we have been, become consistent again and cross fingers and toes for a raft of better luck than we've had so far this term.

nothing wrong with a bit of optimism. we've got loads of reasons to be cheerful. we've got gerrard and torres, our luck with injuries has to change at some point, the other top sides are all dropping points and losing more games than usual, there's the ACN to come, it's nearly christmas and tom hicks, george gillett and alex ferguson are all well capable of dropping dead from heart attacks next week.

actually, what would happen to the club's debt etc if they were both to (leveraged) buy the farm next week?

If we can get a few wins together, build our confidence and get within 5 points by the start of February who knows.

mate and i agreed on a start of february watershed point over beer the other night. key thing is going to be keeping everyone fit over those cold winter months when hamstrings can go twang.

If this thread has 27 pages by Monday then you will know then answer!

If we can get back to playing properly then we can certainly make up the gap. Chelsea have to come to Anfield so I am going to call it a 7 point gap :)

Edit: 7 point gap after we demolish the gooners!

I simply want a win tomorrow. Then we can take it on from there. Someone posted a thread last week about how our run from the Blackburn game wasnt too difficult, turns out we dropped points against Blackburn itself!! Gimme a win tomorrow and then we can dream. :D

ok we have the official optimism thread. I'm totally confident we'll win today.

A win today would be nice, otherwise we are leaving it fairly late in the season to go on a run.

If we can narrow it to 7 points at Christmas and are playing good football regularly, have adjusted to Aqualini's impact, have cut out most of the soft goals from set pieces and then can keep our best 2 fit for the 2nd half of the season then i'll believe we can do it. Depending on Chelsea and Man U both having a blip to allow us to catch them.

Most of it hinges on being fortunate with the fitness of those 2.

In terms of points it is certainly possible if we win our next five games in a row.

But if you're looking at our play on the pitch in generally then we must focus on 4th.

Exactly right

I can see all of the teams above us losing a lot more points. United and Chelsea could easily lose another 4 or 5 matches each. But at present, I don't have much faith in us putting together a run that would put us back in contention. But who knows? With players back from injury and bit more belief it could happen however unlikely it may once have seemed.

some serious getting ahead of ourselves in this thread. get 6 points in the next few days and we can maybe look at it then

I feel a need to qualify my earlier comments.

I listed a long list of 'ifs'. If we sort out our defence, if we go on a run of wins including today, if we keep Gerrard and Torres fit for most of the remainder of the season, if Chelsea and Man U suffer a blip.

For all of those things to happen is statistically remote which is why my head says we've left ourselves too much to do, even if we get our act together. But my heart wants to believe there's a chance, even though very recently I was anticipating meltdown and finishing out of the top 5. Football is weird like that, can't help yourself hoping for the best.

A couple of wins can do wonders for us.

Why would we be lucky if we did get 3rd? Wouldn't we deserve it?

from where we are now both position wise and the type of football we are playing if someone offered third now i'd rip their arm off.

Probably the most comical post ever in the history of the forum, even if the above happens we havent the quality to put that sort of run together.
