Strange day today. Last week people wanted Benitez' head on a silver platter. Today, with a win home against Birmingham, Benitez can enter the international break four points off Alex and Arsene before the home game against City.

Gerrard and Torres will stay home and finally have time to work on their fitness. I imagine a lot of body work with Sammy Lee throwing the leash from early morning. Late nights they'll spend loads of quality time together playing Pro Evo and watching film from past glory nights, such as the beating of Real Madrid Manchester, both in their full kits.

When City visits in 13 days, they'll each score a brace, and we'll be flying again come Fiorentina.

After the 2nd Lyon game I was feeling really rather glum, but for some unknown reason I've been getting the feeling recently that we might just dig our way out of this.

I think that the performance against Lyon led me to believe again. Result sucked but the performance was very good.

I love the Rafatollah. Class !

I went to my next door neighbour's house-party to celebrate his 40th birthday over the weekend.

He's a mad Chelsea fan and one of the senior stewards at Stamford Bridge. He pipes up towards the end of the evening "Why do you lot stick up for your manager and chant his name even when your on this long losing streak? We'd have chucked him out ages ago and got a big name manager in to replace him"

So I shot back at him "That's because you lot are a bunch of classless c**** who wouldn't know what loyalty and support was if it smacked you in the gob".

Cue silence in the house, tumbleweed blowing gently across the floor of the kitchen and a death stare from the missus.

His father in law broke the ice with. "I keep telling him he's a c*** but he won't listen, now he's got a second opinion. He might !"

although you are entirely correct, the simplest answer is that it's very very very unlikely that anyone could do better or as well with the available resources and working conditions (I reserve my rights in criticising Rafa's team selections) and that the biggest names would probably not be minded to try

The level of the opposition is what makes me still feel possibly more optimistic than I should. For me Manchester United are as weak as they have been in a long, long time. Every time they play I see weak links.

Chelsea are almost certainly the strongest squad pf players but they have been inconsistent over the last month, I'm not sure about Ancelotti and I think they'll continue to drop points against teams they shouldn't.

City are still a work in progress, and I think Spurs and Villa will likely drop away as the season goes on as they always do.

If we can just get a full strength side out for ten games or so, I really do believe we can get ourselves back in it. I think the points total to win the league this season will be lower than it has been in some time, and I feel we have the best first eleven in the Premier League when they are all fit and available.

They'll also be mising their two best players for a month in January (one of whom they struggled massively without last season).

Long, long way to go yet.

Agree on the point total as well - don't think anyone will get what we did last season.

The fact of the matter is that their star midfielder is Darren Fletcher, says all about the quality of the midfield they have. He wouldn't get near another Top 4 midfield when everyone was fit.

Really shocked they didn't bring a top midfielder in during the summer, someone who ran the game for them. They got completely battered by Iniesta and Xavi in the CL and pissed on by Lucas and Masch in our game.

Really, really poor in that area at the moment.

.....

Could do with them signing Faustino Asprilla (or Rodney Marsh for older 'readers') in January. That'd mocker them right up.
