psl Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 (edited) When do they vote for this? Around January time isn't it? I know its early but maybe its not as early as that. I can't really see too many other contenders. Alonso has played very well but simply isn't 'glamorous' enough to win it. Ashley Young? Is he still eligible for the young player award? Who else has played well? Bosingwa, Ireland, Anelka, Robinho? None of them likely winners I don't think. The usual suspects such as Ronaldo, Lampard and Terry haven't had exceptional seasons by their standards. Stevie's again I reckon. Edited January 1, 2009 by psl
floyd the barber Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 If Reina gets the golden glove AGAIN....he should get it!! About time he deserved some credit....the best goalkeeper in england, definetly in the top 5 in the world and gets little to no recognition..

I considered including him in the post but there's simply no way that a goalkeeper is going to win it.
Hassony Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 Xabi alonso has been the best player in the league this season
Ste M Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 It shouldn't be, I've just said in another thread Xabi has been head and shoulders the best player in the league this year, but the longer we continue to play well, the more votes Gerrard will get. IMO he didn't deserve it the last time, and if he wins it this year, I think he'll be a very lucky lad.
Alonso Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 Reina currently has 11 clean sheets in 20 apps, Cech 11 in 18 and Van de Sar 11 in 17. The next closest are Friedle and Schwarzer who are both on 8.
mathewbet1 Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 Alonso does not score enough goals for someone of his undoubted quality imo
Ste M Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 Alonso does not score enough goals for someone of his undoubted quality imo He doesn't score goals because he's barely allowed to go forwards. His job is to sit and conduct the orchestra, if you will.
Magic8Ball Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 He doesn't score goals because he's barely allowed to go forwards. His job is to sit and conduct the orchestra, if you will.he doesn't score enough goals because he doesn't have the pace to get back if he loses/gets caught in position so he plays it safe... can't fault him, though I wish he would score more goals
Alonso Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 he doesn't score enough goals because he doesn't have the pace to get back if he loses/gets caught in position so he plays it safe... can't fault him, though I wish he would score more goalsAlso when he does they get chalked off!!
psl Posted January 1, 2009 Author Posted January 1, 2009 Also when he does they get chalked off!! Indeed. Anyway, that was his goal. And it could be the most important of the season.
Ste M Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 he doesn't score enough goals because he doesn't have the pace to get back if he loses/gets caught in position so he plays it safe... can't fault him, though I wish he would score more goals He's played in an attacking role for Spain with success (he was given license to get forwards during the Euro's and played very well), and he was more attacking when he was at Sociedad. Even in his first season here he was allowed to get forwards more. I've no doubt he can do it, but it's case of him being told to sit back.
billybunter Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 tbh his shooting has been a little off this season.
Falconhoof Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 It'll depend on how the second half of the season goes. I have a hunch that some players will play well and they could emerge as likely contenders for this award.
psl Posted January 1, 2009 Author Posted January 1, 2009 It'll depend on how the second half of the season goes. I have a hunch that some players will play well and they could emerge as likely contenders for this award. But when do players vote?
Rimbeux Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 The players follow the press and the media profiles, it will be Gerrard because he has come into top form this last month and will probably sustain it through the next 6 to 8 weeks at least when the ballot is open
Falconhoof Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 But when do players vote? Good point, i'd forgotten that bit. Stupid voting for an award mid-season like.Gerrard, i'd have thought.
Hassony Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 it was gerrards to lose, until sunday obv. Good point, i'd forgotten that bit. Stupid voting for an award mid-season like.Gerrard, i'd have thought. is that because Gerrard has been better than Alonso? or because he is "Mr Liverpool"?
Falconhoof Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 These awards tend to go to 'impact' players or matchwinners. Gerrard will pull in more votes than Alonso I reckon.
MFletcher Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 Fellow players rarely vote outside the 'big names'. At the minute, it's Gerrard's to lose. Hopefully he won't be too distracted by the court case and can continue his recent excellent form.

Roy Keane won it once, and Terry seeing the list I am surprised that Viera never won it! footballers are pretty thick so they'll probably vote for Deco!!! Edited January 1, 2009 by Hassony

lawrie Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 Xabi has been great but Stevie has been better overall
Sion Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 Stevie has been better overall Has he? I would say he's only peformed at his top level for a quarter of this seasons games, whereas Xabi has performed at his top level for at least 75%
