We have received information from AFC Sunderland that the ticket allocation for our fixture on the opening day of the season has been set at 2361 - a reduction in excess of 600 tickets to the normal allocation available to visiting supporters.

This decision has been enforced by the Local Licensing Authority based on reports from the Football Authorities of persistent standing by Liverpool Football Club supporters at away FA Premier League fixtures.

 

Both AFC Sunderland and Liverpool FC are powerless to reverse this decision as the ground capacity is set by the Licensing Authority and written into a legal document, (Ground Safety Certificate)

 

Obviously we are disappointed that 600 Liverpool supporters will not be able to see the match but this shows the power the Local Authorities have when they have concerns on safety issues.

 

In order to reduce the possibility of this decision being taken by other Local Authorities we would appeal to all our supporters to refrain from persistent standing both at home and away fixtures.

I must admit, I find it's getting to be a pain in the ar*e when you go away and people want to stand for the entire match. It's not easy when you've got a little kid with you and he can't see because big men in front don't want to sit down.

 

I'm up for a bit of enthusiastic standing when the action hots up, but there's an element who have a machismo about wanting to stand for the entire game.

 

At the end of the day, we all bought into the idea of all-seater stadia after Hillsborough, so there's not much of an argument for trying to undermine their existence. If there's to be lobbying for standing sections again, then fine, and I think that would be a good idea, but whilst these grounds have seats in them, and there are people who've paid money to be able to see from a sitting position (kids, the disabled, the old, the fat, etc.), then I don't think it's unreasonable for clubs to ask people to sit the f*ck down.

 

I don't think these complaints are about a bit of jumping up and down, but it's the persistent, just standing for the sake of it, total disregard for those behind them, brigade who are giving 'standing' a bad name.
