Fowler makes shock Blackburn move

Fowler joined Cardiff last year after being released by Liverpool

Robbie Fowler has signed for Blackburn after rejecting a pay-as-you-play deal from Cardiff.

The 33-year-old ex-England striker was expected to sign a new one-year deal at the Bluebirds but told the club on Thursday he would be joining Rovers.

Fowler scored six goals in 16 games in an injury-hit season at Ninian Park after joining Cardiff from Liverpool.

He has not played since mid-December because of a hip injury that required surgery in the United States.

Give your thoughts on Fowler's move

"We signed him last year with a year's option, but at this stage in his career it's understandable that he accepts an offer to go to the Premiership," Cardiff chairman Peter Ridsdale told BBC Radio Wales.

"We have to thank Robbie and move on, he goes with our best wishes.

"His image rights were important to us last year, but now we're looking at what he could do on the field.

"Robbie's move frees up budget for us to look for another striker.

"We're pretty close to signing a new striker in a deal that I've been working on all week, when that's done we'll look for another front man to take Robbie's place."

New Blackburn manager Paul Ince is an old friend of Fowler from their time at Liverpool.

Fowler made his Liverpool debut as an 18-year-old in 1993, scoring 171 goals in 330 games before joining Leeds for £11m in 2001 and then Manchester City for £6m in 2003.

He returned for a second spell at Anfield in January 2006, although his starting appearances were limited.

He hasn't signed by the way, he is only joining Rovers for pre season and to prove his fitness, no contract has been signed

Between Robbie and Voro? it would be more like a sumo wrestling match

Robbie would win by a hair pull

In a way I hope he fails to prove his fitness because I think he wont be up to playing in the PL anymore and I really wouldn't like to see him looking past it.

I look forward to the Kop spending the whole game singing to a fella sat on the opposition bench, rather than supporting the players who are actually on the pitch playing for Liverpool

He's been past it for quite a while now.

It'd be like the good ol' days when Owen used to score and the Kop would respond with chants of "fowler,Fowler" because "our Robbie" was on the bench.

My favourite was when they chanted his name when he got an assist for Man City that sent us two one down

Was that when Anelka scored in the last minute at Anfield meaning we needed to win at Stamford Bridge on the last day to finish fourth?

He loved the club so much, you see. What was it that Ruddock said the players motto was? oh yeah "win, draw or lose, it's first to the bar for the booze".Great days, great days..

I often wonder what would have happened had we won that game (I think it was one all at one point) ~ From reports I've read Chelsea would've been really deep in the brown stuff.

Supposedly Roman has said he would have just bought Spurs instead.

Chelsea would probably be playing against Leeds.

Houllier brought on Berger, who was playing his last game for us before being released. I think the romantic in Ged believed that Berger would sign out with a goal. In fact, as he was just coming back from injury, it was obvious he wouldn't be able to throw himself into the game completely, as he had to try and get a contract elsewhere.
