JamesMc Posted June 26, 2008 Posted June 26, 2008 Doing City Talk in the morning, not often that you get the heads up, usually they ring and get you out of bed, giving you 5 minutes before your on. They want to talk about the new stadium, about the possibility of naming rights on it. They want the fans view, and no doubt a Union slant. Its all off the back of them speaking to Dalglish, who said he would rather see the money given to Rafa for players. Then that Tom Cannon (the bitter blue financial "expert") is gonna have a say, he reckons the club will have already looked at getting a sponsor for the ground. Then me. Fans view. My view is mixed. Personally I agree with Kenny. I would prefer to see us winning leagues again at Anfield before moving elsewhere. Be continually successful. Should the stadium go ahead (I will talk about the money not being there) I think the issue of naming rights will come up. Should it be called Anfield? I don't know. Some people will always call it that regardless, some will want to keep tradition, others will never see it as the same place so want a new name. Others don't care. If they want a sponsors name on it, or any name for that matter, they should ask fans for their view. Be careful in our choice, be sure that if we go down this route we get the best price. After all, we tie in to a deal, then 5 years down the line we start winning leagues and European Cups year after year, we will have lost out. But essentially, consult with fans, season ticket holders, fan card holders, PTS. All those who go the stadium. A chance to have their tuppence worth, and then its fair. As for the stadium happening, with costs going up, and no steel yet bought, then we might be talking about naming a hole in the ground rather than a stadium. So what are other peoples views on naming rights? Just so I can get an idea, give across a balanced view. Never let it be said we are undemocratic.
JamesMc Posted June 26, 2008 Author Posted June 26, 2008 I have posted this on RAOTL, RAWK, Irish Kop, On The Kop, YNWA, and Anfield Road. I don't have log ins for any other sites, so if you do, can you please post it on there on my behalf (just one of you not all, I don't want to flood the internet), and post a link in this thread so I can get feedback from them sites. Thanks
muleskinner Posted June 26, 2008 Posted June 26, 2008 I don't see any way around the rights being sold under the current owners or if DIC/whoever takeover. I'm not sure if I like the idea of 'Anfield' being commercialised as The Coca-Cola Anfield Stadium or whatever so if we must go down that route then something like 'The Emirates' would be preferable so as there is no pretence.
oakie bob Posted June 26, 2008 Posted June 26, 2008 As far as I am concerened they can call it the Stadium, the City Talk, No Blues here, we have 5 european cups so feck off man utd, and if Carlsberg did stadiums this is how it would look. It will always be new Anfield, Arsenal got a great deal for there stadium, do you hear there fans moan. As long as the money goes to Rafa to biy players then thats what we want, with a new Stadium the pressure is to make sure we are the the Champs League every season to pay for it so Rafa needs the money to make sure we are there. Only concerns are the council banging on about the shared stadium, it scare me G&H may get in touch with the lovie as it would help both of them even including Tescos as they still get the bitters ground for there new superstore
oakie bob Posted June 26, 2008 Posted June 26, 2008 The G&H Love Shack-a-dome. You can get George to play the B52's
Flanders Posted June 26, 2008 Posted June 26, 2008 New Anfield. Sometime the obvious answer is the correct one. If someone wants to pay a gazillion to name it after their brand then let them, for obvious reasons. It's just a new stadium, it will never be another anfield.
Falconhoof Posted June 26, 2008 Posted June 26, 2008 I wasn't around when there was a debate over shirt sponsorship. I expect that it was a controversial decision at the time but nobody cares too much any more.
Mike Posted June 26, 2008 Posted June 26, 2008 i'd like anfield incorporated into any name - such as the adidas anfield stadium.
Gunga Din Posted June 26, 2008 Posted June 26, 2008 i think its inevitable the naming rights will be sold. But they can call it what they like, its always going to be Anfield to me
Herbie von Smalls Posted June 26, 2008 Posted June 26, 2008 i suspect it's inevitable in this day and age that stadium sponsorship is seen as too lucrative a revenue to forego. i'd prefer the sponsor's name not to be the first part of the title. so something like 'the anfield sponsornamehere stadium', rather than the 'the sponsornamehere anfield stadium', makes the notion a little less crass for me.
Billy Dane Posted June 26, 2008 Posted June 26, 2008 The new ground won't be Anfield, it's new, it's shiny and we should take as much money as possible from sponsors who want to associate themselves with our name. The sponsors should be companies that can help take us forward and be brands that will enhance our name, i.e. not gambling, alcohol etc. I don't believe for a second that the owners (whoever they are) will not look for partnerships with companies to help fund the ground. We are going to go from 30 executive boxes to 100 with the new ground, there will be far greater commercial opportunities with the new ground, our match day revenue will rise dramatically with the new ground. Sentiment says we should stay where we are, commercial common sense dictates we need the new ground if we are to compete successfully in the new world order. How much can we get for naming rights over a 10-15 year period with one of the biggest names in world football?Who wouldn't want their name associated with the Kop, arguably the most famous and passionate place in football? If Rick Parry and co had been on the ball and not stuck in the past, we could have generated income from this without selling the club.
hideNseek Posted June 26, 2008 Posted June 26, 2008 i'd like anfield incorporated into any name - such as the adidas anfield stadium. Agree
Paddy 66 Posted June 26, 2008 Posted June 26, 2008 As its not actually Anfield lets get the best deal possible for the name, I would hate to have seen the naming rights for Anfield sold off.
growler Posted June 27, 2008 Posted June 27, 2008 (edited) from a defensive point of view (ie to encourage the financing of the team for success of whoever owns us) I would like a sponsor who has accelerators based on club success. Also, its critical to have new anfield somewhere in the name, even if it is hardly ever used. what happens after it is paid for? we want to have transferability. I mean, what if emirates don't renew with arsenal? What they gonna call it? the only other option is the liverpool ??? stadium. after all, once we evict everton out, the city is ours HA HA HA!(evil laugh) Edited June 27, 2008 by growler
cymrococh Posted June 27, 2008 Posted June 27, 2008 I see it as an inevitable necessary evil. I really hate the idea but I'm resigned to it.
Rich Gobey Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 As 'Anfield' is one of the most famous stadium names in the world, I'd imagine there is a good chance that the new ground will include the word 'Anfield' in iot somewhere, along with a sponsors name. As a valuable part of the 'brand indentity' of the club, it would almost be negligent not to use it. It might be a bit grubby, but then so is having a sponsors name in huge white letters accross the front of the shirt.

I'm sure Parry said ages ago that the problem with keeping the name Anfield in the title, such as 'Addidas Anfield' is that people will just shorten it to Anfield, and such the sponsors won't pay nearly as much as if it was called the Addidas Stadium.

Is the right answer. Reckon Stanley Park would be a great name too.
