Strange olde game...

Here we were, at ahigh and optimistic for the season......yet Pool under Rafa cannot overcome the top clubs more notably the mancs while Houllier has beaten them time and again with lesser teams? What gives? Its doing me head in and the player who did the mancs in is plying his trade at 'lesser' teams nowadays?

In two seasons, we controlled the game vs the mancs to a great extent only to be suckered into a 1-0 loss. Begnning to feel like mancs are our hoodoo team.....

We struggled to get decent result against the Mancs during the late 70's and 80's too. They've always represented a bogey side for us.

They've become strange games to watch (at least for me - I don't know how common the feeling is). I've expected us to be the better side but a sort of grim fatalism has made me fear they'll sneak a winner from a set piece. It's a bit like watching us play Ged's Liverpool team.

I thought it was a well worked set piece.

The old Sweden team used to use that free kick quite a bit, along with the one where Brolin would stand on the far end of the wall, have the ball passed by him into space and then spin away and hit it.

If it was down to anything it was down to one of the players on the line (Mascherano) pushing up (correctly, IMO) and the other (Benayoun) not pushing up and thus leaving Tevez onside.

Picking out Rooney was good although typically with our luck in these games he mis*** his shot straight to Tevez.

 

Then again nobody picked up Rooney and nobody was near Tevez either and he was 3 yards from the goal.

i don't remember seeing him blocked. not watched it again though. that carragher ended up being the closest to shutting rooney down was ridiculous.

Whilst that may be true it was clearly a collective error as almost every defender then seemed to lose their position. Riise almost made it to the D and was claiming offside by this point and the defense was in a right mess by the time Tevez put the ball in.

Redknapp talked all sorts of sh*te, but regarding their goal he was talking (rightly) about our failure to close Rooney down, but totally ignoring the defender on the line playing Tevez onside. Clearly he just wanted to express the bee in his bonnet about zonal marking.
