Sometimes things can never look better than when you are peering through the s***, or as our anthem eloquently puts it, walking through the storm towards the golden sky.

 

Before I start I want to say that I wasnt impressed with how we played up to the sending off, which changed the game. And I also didnt agree with Gerrard getting the hook before Momo, but moving on.

 

Here is where the faith comes in, we were on a bad run of form and not playing well. Lets face it, we put in one performance away to Reading and that was in the Carling Cup. Between the 2 international breaks and last Saturday, we have not been playing anywhere near our potential.

 

Pompey 0-0 - Bad Performance - Good result

Porto 1-1 - Bad Performance - Good result

Birmingham - Bad Performance - Bad result

Wigan - Not the best Performance - Good result

Marseille - Bad Performance - Bad result

Spurs - Bad Performance - Bad result

Everton - Result result result result

 

What I am trying to get at is, we are in some position if we are coming out of our bad patch. And, it will be a great bad patch giving we turned 1 pt into 4pts with last minute goals in the last two games. We all know the hall-mark of good teams winning when playing badly - well maybe this was our rough patch.

 

Alonso and Agger are expected back soon. Torres should be fit.

 

If you are a religious person and believe without seeing well maybe you can apply the same to Liverpool - we dont know if we are coming out of the sticky patch, but if we are and we start putting in performances then this could have been the best sticky patch we have had in a long time.

Your right, the next few results are key, if we keep stuttering then we will have possible chances of getting out of our group and chasing the CL but nothing like the optimism after the Derby game.

I didn't think we were that bad against Spurs (apart from some horrid defending) - we really should have put it away when Voronin and Gerrard were touching each other's c***s in the box instead of trying to score.

It will be good to hit some form, we'd probably shock a few and put the wind up some. I get the impression that the wider football world believes that what they've seen over the past six weeks is the real Liverpool and what they expect to see and face each week. Contrast with the view on Man U or Arsenal playing badly and winning, which is one of 'we know they can play much better' but they got the result all the same.

 

 

Some may say that's fair, some may say it's of no consequence, but personally I believe in the power of your reputation going before you into games, having the opposition fearing you is a great advantage and has done well for Man U in particular. On the flip side, having the oppo thinking you are maybe a soft touch away from home, wont trouble them defensively, dont like it up you etc, can turn into a major issue.

We've been absolutely awful for about a month now, yet we're still in a decent position in the league which is of course number one priority this year.

 

Bearing in mind we usually finish strongly with Rafa's penchant for resting players regularly, we could end up looking back at the Everton game as the moment when the players got their early season belief back and kicked on.

 

Under different circumstances we could have lost against Portsmouth, Wigan and Everton but instead we're still unbeaten. That game on Saturday bore all the hallmarks of a turning point, and with key players returning from injury hopefully that is exactly what it'll prove to be...

Totally agree.

 

If only good teams can play sh*te and still win/not lose, then we must be a superb team in disguise, at the moment.

 

There's no doubt, considering our football that it seems like a miracle that we're unbeaten. Still, as I've said elewhere, from small flukey acorns do mighty oaks grow.

 

Beating Arsenal will change our season. I just knows it.

I think we played particularly well against Touloue and Derby, but before that we weren't special. Yet the Derby performance felt like we were building up to some serious momentum. That's what's so galling about what's happened subsequently.

It really is a 'dip' - we did play well for the first few games, had a dip but remain unbeaten and have eeked out last minute goals in games we were behind - we just need to come out of it. If we do, I imagine it will do wonders for our confidence and we would be unlikely to see such dip again.

Mentally we seem to be more at it than previous years. What Riise said in a recent interview, "I've never known there to be such a sense of belief in the dressing room," is starting to show on the scoresheet.

 

We've had the character to score late goals in 3 of 9 league games. How many times last season did we score a late goal that put more points on the board? 1 by my count - Kuyt's late winner at Reading. We came back from behind to beat Everton, despite not doing so on any of the 9 occasions we were behind away from home last season. Yes, it was against 10 men, but it bodes well for future away games and with injured friends ready to enter the fray I wouldn't be surprised to see a late Goodison winner spark another winning run.
