The England ladies put in a gritty performance - they now have to beat Argentina by 2 clear goals to qualify for the knockout stages. Will they go out in a penalty shoot-out?

It is noticeable that the women's game is played in a more sporting spirit than the men's game, and there is genuine warmth between the coaches.

The goalies are rubbish, though!

How did you calculate that england need to win by two goals to go through? a win is enough if germany manage to beat japan

I think we should avoid comparing it to men's football and treat it as a completely different game. The fact is that we chaps are naturally stronger and more athletic. Taking athletics as an example, a good sixth form boy could beat most of the women's world records. In tennis, the world ranked 465th male player would have little difficulty in beating the Wimbledon Ladies' Champion. The fact that women are not as good as men should not stop them enjoying women's football.

That's what the BBC are saying here I'm sure you are right and the BBC are quoting that score as the maximum goal difference that will be necessary.

I think they should play on slightly smaller pitches with slightly smaller goals. The keepers are atrocious

 is that true?

The current 100m WR for women according to Wikipedia is 10.49 (electronic time). Prior to that, it was 10.76 (electronic).

There were two athletes in my school who could run in well under 10.8, using manual timing.

In comparision, a 10.49 record time was "broken" by men in 1921 (10.4). Current record for men was recently 'smashed' by Powell (broke his own record) - 9.74, compared to his earlier record of 9.77

Women, physically, are not as strong nor as fast as men.

The women's game is still crap but it's clearly come on a hell of a lot over the last 3 or 4 years. However, the goalkeeping has always been shocking (no doubt Paul Robinson is looking at it thinking "wow, they're ace.") and seems to be getting worse as standards elsewhere improve.

the German team, one of the best teams in it played a german under 17 boys team in a warmup and got thumped out of sight. Womens international football is of about the same standard as pub team football, except with worse goalkeepers

Aye

Terible to watch.

Most pub teams would beat the Woman World Champions, like you say they usually lose against U-16 boys teams.

My mate went to Loughborough Uni (plays non-league footie now) and trained with England women's team when he was there. He said that they would be absolutely smashed by a men's non-league team as they just can't physically compete.

We played a women's football varsity team from the US - after we'd gotten over drooling over juggling breasts and fine legs (and having gone down 2-0 in about 5 minutes), we then proceeded to thump them 9-2 or such - in 25 minutes.

They just can't compete, even those at the top level - whether its physically or for some reason I don't know
