Atletico Madrid are reported to have set their sights on luring Jose Reina away from Liverpool and back to La Liga.

Spanish daily AS claims Atletico have made the former Villarreal goalkeeper one of their top transfer targets.

Atletico are searching for a new goalkeeper with Leo Franco failing to perform on a consistent basis and Christian Abbiati only being on loan until the end of the season.

The capital club are believed to have sounded out Reina's representatives to find out if the keeper would be interested in a move back to Spain.

However, Liverpool are unlikely to entertain any move for Reina who is firmly established as the No 1 at Anfield.

Reina has previously expressed his happiness at Anfield and he signed a new deal earlier in the summer to keep him at the club until 2012.

I can't see him returning home in the near future, especially not to some perennial underachievers like Atletico. We'd be mad to sell for a penny under £15m, probably worth more. Don't think he's that likely to oust Casillas wherever he goes TBH, so it's not like he has to move for his international career. He's at Liverpool, CL every year, challenging for honours, says his family are happy here - can't see why he'd entertain a move to a mid-table Spanish club. Think his dad used to play for A.Madrid, but still jog on Atleti.

How much was Buffon? £35m, wasn't it?

£50m and he's yours.

This is early, thought they'd leave it till November/December time.

Now we wait for Alonso to Barca or Real and Rafa to Real as soon as Shuster loses a League game.

f*** and off springs to mind, although seriously, i don't think he would even entertain the idea... At least for another couple of seasons..

Doubt he'll be leaving any time soon. Means we'll probably be selling Carson to Villa though. Hopefully get around £10m for him considering how much Gordon went for.

i do hope that may have helped our chances in getting a somewhat "inflated price"

We need a celebrity death match. Carson v reina.

will the UEFA rules that meant chelsea only registered 23 players for CL have an impact?

As for going 'home' I can see the pull for him, but I'm sure he can do that when he is 30

Meanwhile, Benitez has ridiculed recent reports suggesting Pepe Reina has emerged as a target for Atletico Madrid next summer.

The Spanish daily AS made the claims last weekend, but Benitez couldn’t have been more dismissive.

“I spoke to some people about this and, unfortunately, I think the journalist who wrote the story is very inexperienced,” said Benitez.

“Maybe before Pepe signed a new contract a lot of clubs wanted to talk to him, but that was many weeks ago. He is very happy at Liverpool and I don’t believe at the start of the season, with Pepe and the team playing really well, is the time to start talking about what will happen at the end of this season. The transfer window is closed and Pepe is really happy here so a story like this is not true.”
