Yakubu's Everton move hits snag

Everton's bid to sign Middlesbrough's Nigerian striker Yakubu for £11.25m has encountered a hitch after the 24-year-old was refused a work permit.

He opted out of playing for Nigeria in 2006, so fails to meet the Home Office requirement of playing in 75% of his country's games in the last two years.

Everton have appealed against the home office decision and will hear the result on Wednesday.

The Toffees agreed the fee with Boro to sign Yakubu earlier in the week.

Yakubu is second only to Thierry Henry in the Premier League goals over the last four years.

Portsmouth were also said to be interested in re-signing Yakubu, who they bought from Maccabi Haifa in 2003, before two years later selling him to Boro, where he clocked up 29 goals in 65 Premier League games.

Yakubu featured in Boro's opening two Premier League games of the season but the missed the next two games against Fulham and Newcastle.

2 weeks ago:

"Manuel had the first part of his medical yesterday and that will be completed today," David Moyes, the Everton manager said. "I would then expect him to become an Everton player within the next 24 hours.

"Manuel was with us on loan last season, so he knows all about us and we hope he will be able to hit the ground running when he arrives.

"He knows about us and what we do, he will give us a different option. We are playing with Lee Carsley and Phil Neville just now in the centre of midfield and he will give us more competition there.

"But he is a different type of player, with a bit more craft. At 21 he was a big player in the European Under-21 championships for Portugal and we are delighted to have him."

They are absolutely fuming.

'Valencia or Everton?' 'Everton or Valencia?' Hmmmmmm

'Think I'll ask Luis Garcia's advice'..................................................'He told me' - "Fantastic city, sh!te team"

I'm sure I read in the paper today that Fernandes' agent was saying he'd turned down Valencia because Everton was the only team he wanted to play for? Bit of a strange one if he does end up signing for Valencia.

(Not that I'm saying any sane person wouldn't chose Valencia ahead of Everton, just in the context of what was said).

Everton have been shocked by Manuel Fernandes' decision to join Valencia - less than 24 hours after he was their guest at the home game with Blackburn.

The Benfica midfielder even spent an hour with chairman and owner Bill Kenwright assuring the Merseysiders that he would be joining them, before apparently heading home.

In fact, Fernandes flew to Valencia, and now looks certain to join them for a £12million fee.

He had already successfully completed a medical at Goodison Park, and the contracts - which included issues of third-party ownership - were being studied by Premier League officials.

Everton boss David Moyes claimed a week ago that Fernandes would "be an Everton player within 24 hours".

And as late as Friday the club were expecting clearance for Fernandes to be in their squad for the Blackburn game.

But the whole deal has been turned on its head, even though Everton had actually agreed to meet the £12m asking price for 100 per cent of the player.

Previously it was believed that they had agreed to pay Benfica £6m for their half of Fernandes, with the third-party owners holding the other 50 per cent.

That initially caused problems for the Premier League, who are clamping down on all third-party transfers in the wake of the Carlos Tevez affair, and Everton then moved to buy out the other 50 per cent from the owners.

But at the last moment it looks as if Valencia, who play in Spain's Primera Liga where third-party contracts are no problem, have stepped in and offered around £10m for just 50 per cent of the player, which means his owners would retain an interest in the player and any future transfer fees.

It is a savage blow to Moyes, who now has a week of the transfer window to find midfield re-enforcement.

According to his agent, Fernandes wanted to play for a team whose future is based in the city.

I've just read what they say on the Russian Everton forum. They are totally gutted. Looks as if they nearly signed the best player in the world and someone stole him fron under their bluenoses

They'll blame it on the Carbon Based Emissions Anfield Pollutes into the world and some how link them to Manuel Fernandes decision...

Something along those lines

Via Mascherano, surely.

I bet we get some

"With the reds**** signing Mascherano the PL have become more aware of 3rd party ownerships, this delayed us signing him and allowed time for Valencia to come in and lead him astray. They must be offering more money than us, we're clearly the bigger club"

Yup, they are called The Russian Toffees http://evertonfc.ru/forum/.

I happen to know two of them living in my own city. All in all there're about 20 evertonians in Russia. Last month they had a kind of a party in Rostov - Toffees of the Soviet Union Unite  - challenged us to play some footy, got beat 7-10 :bleh:

Rather nice fellas however, far better than the Russian mancs not to mention Chelscum. A couple of them even traveled to their last game vs Rovers.
