I am 'arguing' with a Man Utd fan on an Aus forum about Beckham. This part of his ramblings made me piss meself laughing.

How can he say he has achieved more than the 3 mentioned below.

The reason Becks went to the USA was that he had nothing left to prove.

He had been the most influential player in the two biggest teams in the world and he was offered the chance to do something no one else had managed to do before - even Pele, Beckenbaur and Maradonna failed - that was capture the hearts of the USA sporting media and public.

He has already achieved more than the 3 previously named together had done.

because he and his wife are vapid, fame-craving whores and they've moved to hollywood. it'll be old news inside three months, the LA pr machine gets bored very quickly.

I took some visitors on a Beverly Hills/movie star homes bus tour last week. The driver said that he sees Beckham almost every day, clothes shopping on Rodeo Drive...:)

He also asked me how Beckham was perceived in the UK, he laughed his ass off when I told him that most people thought he was a c*** who was never that good a footballer in the first place.

love him or loathe him, he is putting bums on seats in all the games he plays.

he attracted 45,000 to game in Washington DC and over 66,000 to a game in New York yesterday.

personally, i cannot stand him, but he seems to be doing a decent job of getting the word out about the game of soccer in a nation that still sees it as a nothing sport.

Not anyone ambitious to win things at the top level...

He's already done that. I think he made a great decision to go there.

what else is there for him to win?

surely he is only missing some medals for international play?

he is coming across as being a very decent guy who is willing to give all kinds of interviews and do the right thing for his present team.

not too long ago he was hanging out with the New York Yankees and Toronto Bluejays before a baseball game in Canada, all of the people he spoke to were very complimentary and he had a go at hitting, catching and pitching.

The guy is living the dream. Can't fault him for anything.

so if gerrard wins the league this season with liverpool he should go to america or retire because he has won everything there is to be won as a club player

should have done it when he is no longer capable of playing top club football in europe

I couldn`t stand him until I watched a programme about him and his vacuous wife hosting a charity event at their dez res to raise money for his academy. It showed him coaching kids and really enjoying himself and being really down to earth, especially with a Down`s Syndrome kid that he really took to. I developed a respect for the guy after that that I never thought he deserved.

Apart from anything else, he could certainly cross a ball and take one hell of a free-kick, but one thing that I never understood was, if he was taking a free-kick, why the hell didn`t they put an extra player on the goal-line?!

because then you will have the attacking team having their player in the six yard line waiting for a touch

don't be so daft.

Beckham is 32, clearly past his best and not able to compete for a full time place in a major league, Gerrard is 27 with many years left, barring injuries.

Here is a list of Beckham's honors.

Manchester United (1992–2003)

Premier League - Champion (6): 1995–96, 1996–97, 1998–99, 1999–00, 2000–01, 2002–03

Premier League - Runner Up: 1994–95, 1997–98

FA Cup Winner (2): 1996, 1999

FA Cup Runner Up: 1995

UEFA Champions League Winner: 1998–99

Intercontinental Cup: 1999

UEFA Super Cup Runner Up: 1999

Community Shield Winner (5): 1993, 1994, 1996, 1997, 2003

Community Shield Runner Up: 1998, 2000, 2001

FA Youth Cup Winner: 1992

Real Madrid (2003–2007)

Primera División Champion (1): 2006–2007

Supercopa de España (1): 2003

Gerrard has a fair bit of catching up to do.

Beckham was offered the chance to make millions and do something good for his sport in another country.

When Gerrard reaches the end of his career, I am pretty sure he would consider a similar offer.

I am definitely not a beckham supporter, but I think he is doing a fantastic job over here and being paid a fortune for doing it.

The very best and the most ambitious look to win the top prizes again and again and once again for good measure - re: Maldini.

His performances for Real Madrid state otherwise - being a player not exactly blessed with pace, the 'way' he plays (and he's kept himself fit) he could go on at the top level for another three years.

what else is there for him to win?

The UEFA Cup for starters. Cheeky responses aside, the Champions League again? (I'm talking about at club level of course).

I'm not faulting him for taking money, but a more ambitious player would not have taken the offer, no matter how lucrative it was.

Either way, Fowler should've followed him to the MLS ...

"Beckham, crosses in to Fowler GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL" x 1000 each game.

I think Beckham is actually underrated and is still a top class player, but to compare him with one of the best defenders of all time who has staying power beyond virtually everyone else is demanding too much. Most players of Beckham's age and prowess simply can't go on at that level till they are 35-36 and still be a significant force.

why is he still being picked for england still? the fact is he could have stayed at real this season and he might have won another spanish title and maybe another CL, he is already richer than any footballer in the history of the game, if he had real ambitions he would have stayed in europe instead of going to LA to hang with his buddy tom cruise

Someone at his age who has already won everything there is to win at club level in different leagues I think is well within his rights to look at ambition as something more diverse than winning those trophies again. He's bringing a lot of attention to the sport in the US - different sights (not to speak of all the money), but I don't think he is merely consigned to hanging out with buddy cruise and raking in his pay check.

So you're saying his ambition is bringing football to the masses in the US, and that it would give him greater pleasure than winning another Champions League?

don't forget Posh's ambition to become the new paris hilton, just wait for the "stolen sex video tape" next year
