Guest RedIsMyColour Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 I know I am not the only one with concerns about the guy. He certainly has the ability. From what I have seen however, he is clearly not a winger. He is not disciplined enough to hug the touch line. He could be dynamite upfront but it depends what plans Rafa has for him. I just hope we don't end up with another big money striker being wasted on the wings to no great effect.
kacangpool Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 i think he's a tad selfish. maybe he just wants to impress more.
Ombudsam Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 i haven''t seen any pre season games. hope this helps
John am Rhein Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 From what I have seen however, he is clearly not a winger. Hurrah! I'd hate to see us waste time and money on a winger!

Frosty Jack Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 far too early to be expressing these kind of concerns based on a couple of 20 minute appearances in pre-season.
Stevie H Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 far too early to be expressing these kind of concerns based on a couple of 20 minute appearances in pre-season.indeed. how many times has this had to be stated this summer by the way? thousands?
Knoxy Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 I can't really figure out where we'll play him? But yes, it's obviously far too early to make any sort of judgement
Guest flaps Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 i think he's a tad selfish. that was one of the criticisims levelled at him by the ajax fans on a couple of message boads prior to his leaving, along with his inconsistent first touch and poor shooting. I'm more confident about the future, I think babel is very raw and may struggle this season but he has the pace, skill and trickery to become a major player for us in time.
Frosty Jack Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 indeed. how many times has this had to be stated this summer by the way? thousands? it should be made everybodys signature until the transfer deadline
Rimbeux Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 As long as he's a listener, he can be whatever is needed of him, and winger, wide forward, or striker. He's an attacking player, so his instincts will serve him well in those positions, he will just have to listen well to his caoches if he's played in a midfield four. He's young, very young in fact, and going on the usual timing, probably a year or two away from everything falling into place and him being a consistent performer, hence the six year deal
The_Adder Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 Just read a piece in the mail with Bobby Robson saying his friends in Holland reckon Maceo Rigters who Blackburn signed for 800k is a better player than Babel. Gonna take that with a pinch of salt methinks. Have high hopes for the lad, reckon he could be a star, certainly got the talent and raw materials from what I've seen and read. Could go one of two ways though and hope it isnt the way of Gonzales and Cisse. Not expecting too much this season, have higher hopes for our Yossi, but he may surprise me and I hope he does!
liverbird04 Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 Have you got a link to that bobby robson article?

They don't compare as players. Rigters is not as technical etc. But if he plays better and do what is he is supposed to do and Babel isn't, then he is a better buy. But they are completely different players. Robson should know this, but I guess it's not as easy to remember everything when you are 90 years old.
RafaShanks Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 Wouldn't it be an idea to give the lad a feckin chance before posts like this?
The_Adder Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 It was in the Sunday Mail with Robsons preview of the new season in the pull out aint got a web link to it sorry... But it basically said exactly that and didnt add anything else when it was previewing Blackburn's season
Paisley Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 Sorry but the league table doesn't lie and we're tenth and it's all Ryan Babel's fault. >>>
R A Softlad Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 indeed. how many times has this had to be stated this summer by the way? thousands? We are the microwave generation Steve.
Sion Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 Yeah, looked quite handy. Has lots of pace, not afraid to run, there's deffo something to work with. Has a piss poor first touch though, what is it with our dutch players and poor first touches.
Zoob Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 Well from the 10 or so minutes that Babel played today, I now officially know that he's rubbish. No goals, no assists. And he mis-controlled the ball a couple of times. A complete waste of money, sack parry, etc etc.
Ste M Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 Wouldn't it be an idea to give the lad a feckin chance before posts like this? I take it you would be jumping on the backs of anyone congratulating him for a series of good performances then eh? Telling them it's only pre-season and the real stuff is what he should be judged on? Yeah, right. Fact is, he's ben s**** so far, in fact that's probably not harsh enough criticism. Granted it's only pre-season, and anyone passing final judgement on him wants to have a severe word with themselves, BUT, he has been garbage, and we spent £12M on him, so i'd have expected to see a little more from him, and people will have their doubts and concerns. And where better to air them than a discussion forum?
