Great news.

If Rafa's comments on Heinze are anything to go by, then any interview with him or Parry should be very interesting.

I was under the impression he had signed for an extra 12 Months with an option of another 12 :S

Either way I'm buzzing that this is more longer term

RAFA'S FINNAN DEAL DELIGHT

Mark Platt in Hong Kong 23 July 2007

Rafa Benitez has reacted with delight after hearing that Steve Finnan has become the latest Liverpool player to pledge his future to the club this summer.

Finnan will put pen to paper on a new three-year deal with the Reds when he returns from Hong Kong next week.

He follows in the footsteps of Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, Xabi Alonso, Pepe Reina and Momo Sissoko, and the manager believes this is another major step along the road to building a solid and successful squad at Anfield.

"This is very good news for us. As I've said many times, we are preparing for the future and we want Finnan to be part of that. He is one of the players that form the spine of the team and him agreeing to sign has to be good, not just for the present but the future also," Benitez told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"Steve is a quality player with consistency perhaps being his greatest quality. He always plays at a very good level. It's not very often that you see him have a bad game. He's a player you can always rely on and, to be fair, it's been that way since I came.

"From training with him every day, you can see just what a clever player Steve is and his form throughout the last three years has not surprised me. From day one he was eager to learn and very receptive to our ideas. I always knew he would be a good player for us.

"He's one of our more experienced players now but I still expect him to improve with age because he'll then be able to analyse the game in more ways and that will be another major positive."

Finnan: I'd like to end my career here

Fresh from agreeing to extend his stay at Anfield, Steve Finnan has revealed he'd love nothing better than to see out his career with the Reds.

Finnan will sign his new three-year deal when the squad returns from Hong Kong next week.

The Republic of Ireland right-back has been one of Liverpool's most consistent players in recent years and is viewed as one of the key members of the squad.

Signed by Gerard Houllier from Fulham during the summer of 2003 Finnan was an unsung hero in the side that won the Champions League in 2005 and FA Cup in 2006.

He's the sixth player to be offered an extended contract at the club this summer and he admits the thought of playing his football elsewhere is one he's never contemplated.

"I'm really pleased that I'll be extending my stay at Liverpool and I can't wait to sign the contract once we're back home. I'm in my thirties now and there's no doubt in my mind whatsoever that this is where I want to play for the rest of my career," Finnan told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"I was never worried about not being offered a new deal to be honest. We initially spoke about it towards the end of last season but there's been a lot going on at the club in recent months and it was never in doubt. The manager assured me that I was in his plans and once talks resumed everything was tied up really quickly.

"I'm not the only player to have agreed a new deal this summer and that's got to be a good sign. It shows there's a lot of stability at the club. Everyone wants to stay and be part of what could be an exciting future. With the new owners coming, the new players we've signed and all the young players around the place there's a lot of expectation."

At 31, Finnan can now be classed as one of the veterans of the team but believes he's still got a lot to offer.

"I've been here four years now and during that time a lot of players have come and gone. It's a squad game now and competition for places is never a problem but I'm confident I can continue to hold down a regular place in the side," he said.

And on his preparations for the new season, Finnan added: "The conditions here are difficult, it's very hot and humid but we're all working really hard.

"Afternoon sessions are best because it's a bit cooler but we shouldn't really complain because we all know how bad the weather has been back in England this summer.

"Pre-season training is always hard but it's certainly paying off. I feel good and I'm raring to go for the new season. It's important for the club to come to places like Hong Kong but I think everyone is just counting down the days to the start of the league season. That's when the real actions will begin and that's what we're gearing ourselves towards."

Rafa: I always knew he would be a good player for us.

Didn't stop him from trying to offload him to Everton at first though.

Rafa makes mistakes as the rest of us. But what is good is that he can accept one and move on. He sells players he don't think are up for it and if he doubts players and they prove him wrong, he gives them another chance, just like it should be. Riise knows what I'm talking about, I think he's playing for a new contract right now...
