Rick Parry has played down reports that Liverpool could revive their interest in Benfica captain Simao Sabrosa.

The winger has been a long-term option for The Reds, who missed out on the Portugal international's signing in August 2005.

Recent speculation has suggested that Rafa Benitez could instigate another bid for Simao at the end of the season.

Following the recent Anfield takeover of George Gillett Jnr and Tom Hicks, Benitez is likely to be armed with a sizeable transfer kitty and would be able to meet Benfica's ?20million (£13.4million) asking price.

But Liverpool chief executive Parry insists no talks have taken place of late and suggested the club will wait until the season's end before deciding their transfer targets.

"At the moment we do not have any negotiations," Parry told O Jogo.

"The end of the season is soon and that will be the time to see."

Reports have also claimed that Manchester United are on the trail of Simao after he impressed against them in the UEFA Champions League earlier in the campaign.

what makes you say that? don't think mourinho is the most popular man at benfica. . .

Its not Mourinho that buys the players at Chelsea, you didn't hear that here first...

I'm not familiar with o'jogo

Or why he'd be talking to them

No idea.

Here's the translated article:

Nélson, Luisão and Simão are white

MARCO GONÇALVES/PEDRO RIBEIRO

With approaching to the end of the championships, many clubs start already to effect the first movements in the direction to strengthen the respective ones equip for the next time. The English emblems do not run away to the rule and yesterday the land press of Its Majesty was prodigal in notice on the possibility of some clubs to be made use to open laces to the stock market to contract players, between them Nélson, Luisão and Simão.

According to the English press, the Newcastle has followed intently the evolution of Nélson and Luisão. ?They are two of between some names, but of moment it does not have nothing of concrete. In the end of the time it will be seen?, advanced, in declaration to the GAME, Kenny Shepard - son of the president of ?magpies? and entrepreneur -, opposing to weave it more commentaries. The proper trainer Glenn Roeder dislocated itself anteontem the Lisbon to attend Portugal-Belgium in Alvalade, confirming that he is in Portugal to the search of reinforcements for equips. ?I am not to the search of pretty players, but yes of reinforcements. If to contract the certain players, all summer the results in field at the next time. The president has conscience of the players who I intend and she did not say me that I did not have to be to see players of this quality. Therefore I assumed that the necessary mounts of money for the acquisition of players will be available?, advanced Glenn Roeder.

In the case of Simão, the referenciados clubs are Manchester United and Liverpool. ?Red devils? considers the incarnate captain as an alternative for the case of Cristiano Ronaldo to abandon the club, while the formation commanded for Rafael Benítez - that it was close to contracting the aggressor has two seasons - faces Simão as one of the possible reinforcements for the right side.

Rick Parry, director-executive of the Liverpool, emphasized to the GAME that ?of moment does not have negotiations?. However, he did not close an eventual business when the season to finish: ?In the end of the time soon he will see himself.?

I dont think Simao is the answer for us, he isnt going to take players on etc and his physique makes me fear the premiership would pass him by

like robben?

Even Robben looks to be more sturdier. I havent seen a single game where Simao gives a fullback a working over, I dont think he's that type of player, he's not got the pace of a Robben or Ronaldo. Plus the fact that robben is from northern europe, its less difficult or dutch players then the portugese to acclimatise to this country's football imo

i'm not sure whether you've tongue in cheek or not, but mourinho often wears an exasperated expression when robben encounters the more physical side of the premiership and 'limps off' with yet another 'injury'.

robben's been quite dynamic, but erratically so. i reckon he'd be much more of a force in spain or italy.

robben's lightning fast and direct as f***. if he worked on his final ball and didn't dive so much he'd be world class. as it is he upsets defences and creates things for his side.

Thats what I like about how Robben plays - he gets into the opposition's penalty box very quickly. Ronaldo has improved that aspect of his game a hell lot since he started in the premiership, doing stepovers at the halfway line really gets you nowhere.

Gonzalez was suppose to be like that... :hmm:

Simao is not the answer, someone who runs at defenses with speed has a good cross and scores goals is the answer

In fairness, he does that.

He bears all the hallmarks of a Rafa signing then.
