i keep on seeing it said that carra's slow. as slow as hyppia, etc

granted, he's no lawro/des walker, but i just dont see him as being slow. he may be marginally slower than rio cleftlip, kolo toure and others but not in any material way that you'd notice how it affects his performance. and he's certainly quicker than goldenboy treeman terry.

i just dont get it.

I think Touré would burn Carra for pace. He's not slow by any stretch but he doesn't suffer the same lapses that used to see him in trouble. He always looks slower running towards his own goal.

Carra is slow by modern standards, and he is not quicker than Terry at all.

He's a great Liverpool defender and legend, don't try and make him something he isn't.

I was shocked to see him beat Messi over 5 yards to a ball the other night. Messi is bloody quick but Carra decided that ball was his. :metal:

I think one of our main weaknesses is a lack of pace throughout the team. Bellamy, Gerrard, gonzalez, Pennant and Momo have decent pace levels but when you compare our squad to say Arsenal - Wenger seems to have a set policy on buying quick players with excellent mobility - we are not blessed with pace.

And you'd be wrong mate.

I've rarely if ever seen Terry cope well when exposed to pace. Carragher has. He has also coped badly but he's done better when exposed far more often than Terry.

Carragher lacks pace on the turn.

I don't think Pennant's particularly quick.

he's not particularly quick. reads the game brilliantly though.

I agree, especially reading the game - you read a situation and already you are a half yard ahead. Whilst he may not be quick when he is running, his understanding allows him to start running a split second before others see it and could be the reason why he gets last minute tackles in despite not being the fastest.

In champ Manager speak, I think Carra lacks "acceleration" but has decent pace ie, in the short three to four yard spaces on the edge of the box, where a nippy attacker can shift the ball past Carra and leave him dead, his lack of acceleration shows. However on the ten to twenty yard races to get onto a through ball (for example), Carra I've always thought holds his own very well. Remember, the major problem when Henry scored against us was that Carra actually beat Henry to the ball ... but then went on his a***!!

Carra is definitely faster than Terry. I can't believe anyone would say he wasn't. He is not faster than Gallas, Toure, Ferdinand and a few others, but Carra is a quick-ish defender. I was surprised by his pace against Barca as he looks like he's getting even faster to me.

Terry is not slow, but that might have something to do with him being light on his feet....

i think this is largely right, coupled with the point that his reading of the game is such that any slowness on the turn is rarely a problem in practice. carra's not slow. how often do you see him being outskinned? by contrast, sami is slow, to the extent it being a weakness which is always vulnerable to being exploited by decent teams. and john terry's a fat overrated phucker who's lack of pace can be exploited by top opponents

To be fair to John Terry, and I never have been before, that's utter tripe.

When he's fit, they hardly ever, ever lose, regardless of who they're playing. Be serious.

whether the chelsea team (i assume you dont mean england) hardly ever lose is a totally different issue.

i have seen JTs lack of pace look like a weakness at international level.

i am not saying that JT's cr@p - just that all this hot air i hear about carra being slow is just guff. why do our fans knock carra for being slow and at the same time laud john terry. it just doesnt make sense. the way we damn carra with faint praise is allied to the issue (which is only of academic interest for me) of why carra is 4th or 5th choice at international level.

You can add Reina and Agger to that list. I think we're getting a decent amount of pace in the side, although one or two more further up the pich wouldn't hurt.
