I've been thinking recently with all the sponsorship that goes on with various competitions what would happen if the S*n sponsored a competition?

What would be the correct response from the fans and club in such an instance?

like the FA Cup?

the club would have to play

i'd imagine the fans would protest at each match we were involved in - can't see a boycott happening although that would be good.

I would be against a pull out, that would be taking it too far, and quite frankly would never happen. Protests like the Arsenal game would be a sure thing though.

I couldn't see any newspaper beng allowed to sponsor a major football competition as it would alienate the other papers and affect the coverage. The competition would end up with much less exposure than before.

I don't post a lot BUT I have to respond to this - are you joking - Taking it too far!! - this is not a joke, this is not some silly game, this is about Liverpool fans whose lives were lost and the piece of crap that insulted them and all of us. There is no TOO FAR.

Hey, I'm sorry, I have full respect for the 96, and don't even insinuate otherwise, but if for example the s*n sponsored the FA Cup, you think we (the club) should pull out? Am I the only one who thinks that would be a bit excessive? By all means we should protest etc... but at the end of day, I doubt Rick Parry is going to be sat in his office reading the news if it was announced, and think, 'oh not having that, we'll pull out'. Not going to happen.

We would look like a right bunch of whiners, the best thing to do, would be to play the games, and show through vocal support or other means how poor a move it would have been by the FA.

Pointless arguement as it would never happen anyway.

It would be feckin brilliant, Christmas and Easter rolled into one. Can you imagine, 'the BBC bring you the quarter finals of FA Cup sponsored by The S*n live from Anfield?

It just wouldn't happen....A Media Based Source would not sponsor a trophy, Imagine the FA Cup sponsored by Sky, BBC would be done for then!

I don't see any reason why a media company couldn't sponsor a cup competition, but I think setting up of their own competition would be a more likely scenario.

The Super League in Rugby League, although not a knockout cup competition is a good example of what media companies can do to a sport. Kerry Packer in cricket is another..

Actually, thinking about it, I'd be interested to hear opinions on why media companies haven't set up their own cup competition before now?

Probably because in other quarters it raises too many awkward questions about a conflict of interests.

I think the FA Cup is to established enough not to be challenged, but the Carling Cup is vulnerable.

If a rival Cup format was founded by a media company offering huge wads of cash for participating, I could imagine there'd be a few teams pulling out of the Carling Cup to play in it.

What I'm not sure about is, the obligations teams have toward the Cups. Are teams obliged to play in the FA Cup and Carling Cup every season?

As far as I can tell from the rules of association, yes.

Do journalists from the s*n come to games and press conferences at anfield?

Reading some of the match reports I think a lot of journalists don't go to games at all.
