Extraordinary Swindle Posted January 18, 2007 Posted January 18, 2007 (edited) Is it an anagram? My guess: Rim A Testicle I can see why some might consider it "interesting stuff", don't get the "statistical nonsense" reference. Edited January 18, 2007 by Red_Zed
Will Posted January 18, 2007 Posted January 18, 2007 We have scored 4 goals from corners, which surprises me
honourablegeorge Posted January 18, 2007 Author Posted January 18, 2007 More goals in open play than Chelsea too.
Mike Posted January 18, 2007 Posted January 18, 2007 thought that was a really interesting set of stats that
honourablegeorge Posted January 18, 2007 Author Posted January 18, 2007 I can see why some might consider it "interesting stuff", don't get the "statistical nonsense" reference. Any statistic that's ever quoted on an internet forum gets rubbished as nonsense by someone.
trowie Posted January 18, 2007 Posted January 18, 2007 We're nowhere near a long ball team!Boltons quite near
ifanew Posted January 18, 2007 Posted January 18, 2007 Any statistic that's ever quoted on an internet forum gets rubbished as nonsense by someone. Have you any statistics to prove that claim?
Puskas Posted January 18, 2007 Posted January 18, 2007 We really do need to score more goals from set pieces. Only 5 from corners and free kicks so far this season! Arsenal have 9, Man U 11, Chelsea 13. We are second only to Man U in the number we score from open play though, which I'm slightly surprised about (thought it would be Arsenal).
Guest Ross17 Posted January 18, 2007 Posted January 18, 2007 Anyone got any other links to stuff like this, passing stats etc?
_00_deathscar Posted January 18, 2007 Posted January 18, 2007 We are second only to Man U in the number we score from open play though, which I'm slightly surprised about (thought it would be Arsenal). Not much in it between ourselves, Chelsea and Arsenal though. We're nowhere near a long ball team! That's always been a tough one to measure. For example, being a long ball team is different from playing long passes ~ when you have two players who can ping a ball 50-60 yards to another players feet in Alonso and Gerrard, you're going to use their abilities.
Alonso Posted January 18, 2007 Posted January 18, 2007 Generally, teams that play long balls have far less possession stats due to the nature of the hopeful hoof up field making it a 50/50 as to whether the team retains possession or not. We nearly always have more posession than our opposition. The long ball teams also generally bypass midfield as it goes long from defence to attack, similar to the later years of Houllier's side when Sami or Riise use to hoof it up to Heskey who'd try and flick it onto Owen.
Kite Posted January 18, 2007 Posted January 18, 2007 Thought the "average position when touching the ball" diagram the most interesting myself... Interesting how much further forward our right wing gets compared to our left, Finnan being further forward on average than Gonzalez being astonishing in a way. Also interesting to see how close Gerrard and Xabi are on average (which I thought was a bad sign really) and the big difference between the match with Bellamy and with Crouch, Crouch on average being behind Kuyt (even though it was at home) whilst Bellamy on the other hand always being ahead of Kuyt....
_00_deathscar Posted January 18, 2007 Posted January 18, 2007 Also interesting to see how close Gerrard and Xabi are on average (which I thought was a bad sign really Yea that struck me as rather odd.
Poolfrog Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 Have you any statistics to prove that claim?63% of all statistics are meaningless We really do need to score more goals from set pieces. Only 5 from corners and free kicks so far this season! Arsenal have 9, Man U 11, Chelsea 13. We are second only to Man U in the number we score from open play though, which I'm slightly surprised about (thought it would be Arsenal). That's probably because you allow yourself to be brainwashed by the media purring over Arenal's "kids" and their and their amazing passing game......like in their defeat at mighty Sheffield United etc. It's one of those accepted media "truths" that you're not allowed to dispute, like the Queen Mother had a lovely smile - that sort of thing
Kite Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 63% of all statistics are meaninglessAnd the other 49% percent, exaggerated ...

However there is a vague possibility that I form my opinions by actually watching football on TV (equally mercifully without the English commentary).
Nerik Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 The set pieces statistic is our downfall I think. In modern football set pieces have become a very important means to score.
ifanew Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 And the other 49% percent, exaggerated ... I agree with you 112%
Puskas Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 I bet Rafa has all those stats on DVD.You're not wrong Benitez says he?s well aware of the figures, but recognises it?s the amount of trophies he?s collected at the end of his reign which matters most. ?I?d prefer to do well over the next 100 game rather than look back, but it?s clear when you look at our record and compare, it?s not bad,? said Benitez. ?When I think about the 100 games we?ve played, I think to myself it?s a pity because it could be even better. ?An important feature is that as well as playing these league games, we?ve also played 59 more cup matches. That?s 20 more than any other Liverpool manager played during the same period. ?I feel this reflects how well we?ve done, because of course we?ve won the Champions League, FA Cup, Charity Shield and Super Cup during this time.
