He's come good this year and I always rated him when he played in Division 1.

I reckon he'd be a better signing than David Villa (someone who even Guillem Ballague says may struggle to adapt).

better than villa?? No chance.

i know doyle has looked good in an average team and was great in div 1 last season, he is no way capable of making the step up to a top team or champions league football.

he has exceeded all expectations so far from his days at cork city a few years ago, but this is as good as it gets for him

I do like to start the New Year with a good laugh so, many thanks.

I didn't think I'd live to see a post where someone of the obvious quality of David Villa would be compared unfavourably with someone called Kevin Doyle who apparently looked good in Division 1!!!

I am not comparing them guys..you have mis-interpreted my post completely.

Villa is a better player...granted. But will he adapt to the English game?

Doyle has scored more goals than Shevchenko...is Doyle better than him? Of course not.

How do you know? He has made huge strides in the last two years. He is obviously a quick learner.

Ever hear the saying you can only beat whats put in front of you? He has risen to every challenge so far in his career. I think there's a chance he could do the same at a higher level.

Normally i'd assume it's an Irish thing but aren't you Serth Efrican?

Magneto's just trying to be cool by pretending to be Irish.

It only works when you're calling for us to sign Duff mate. ;)

fair point,

but in my opnion he wouldnt be able to make the step up. of course i could be wrong. but i bet im not.

he hasnt exactly lit up the international stage. although granted he's not exactly playing with world beaters

I wouldn't kick the idea of getting a striker from a lower league into touch. Look at Aldridge. Scored plenty in the lower leagues but noone was certain he would do it for us even though he looked like his predecessor Rush! If we are embarking on that route, what about Jamie Cureton? He's scored a hatful of goals in the lower leagues. Could he be another Aldridge?

Age has a lot to do with the change. Sheva is past his best, has been struggling with a knee for about a year missing games and training, should really have rested in the summer and worked on his conditioning. Like Morientes, he'd have been able to hack it better if he came five years earlier and wasn't in physical decline so unable to get stronger.

I would be biased as I think he's a great lad, but I wouldn't be sure yet either.

The one thing, that has been pointed out, yet people seem to be dismissing is that he has taken every 'step up' to a new level in his stride.

He hasn't set the international stage alight, but anyone watching Ireland will tell you he has been quite good in a poor team so far, leading the line far better than others more experienced players in my opinion.

I find his attitude refreshing more than anything, he will talk to the media at the drop of a hat, but is intelligent enough for it not to turn into stupid back page headlines all the time, while he is a genuinely decent lad who is doing very well for himself yet keeps his feet on the ground.

On the pitch, he's quick, strong, good in the air and a quality finisher off either foot, plus he is a clever player and he works his socks off. for his team.

Having said that, I wouldn't think he is the answer to our prayers, but I don't think it's fair to rubbish him either.

For not being as good as David Villa and particularly not for his unexotic name!

Funnily enough, I reckon Arsenal could really do with a player like him, but if any of the top four teams give him the chance to 'step up' I'd say it will be the mancs.

I think Dirk Kuyt and Kevin Doyle are very similar in the way they play actually, but we have the better of those two players.

He'd be a good fourth striker for us if we were rotating three others.

Any three from Kuyt, Crouch, Bellamy and Villa plus Doyle would be s***hot.

I'll get slaughtered for this but he'd be a better player to have in that role than Fowler.

Would that make Doyle 5th striker?

Kuyt

Crouch

Bellamy

Villa

Doyle

Doyle in a rich vein of form and good luck to the lad. But I would go with the view that he is one for a fair to middling team.

As for the Fowler comparison, Doyle would be about as useful as the great man at this stage. That is to say he would not be very useful, since neither Fowler nor Doyle would be getting much playing time.

The difference between Fowler and Doyle is that Robbie is nearing the end of his career and so can perhaps live with a peripheral role, since his best is clearly behind him (much as we all love him). Doyle might yet have his best ahead of him, but if he was sitting on our bench as our fifth striker no one would ever find out!

Doyle's a good honest pro and seems to have a good head on his shoulders. I don't he's at a level yet where he can be a Liverpool striker.

Every game is huge for us and he might need more of an apprenticeship at a next tier up club to Reading.
