Former Red Emile Heskey admits he would have loved to have worked with Rafael Benitez.

The striker, who will face his former club when Liverpool travel to Wigan on Saturday, left Anfield just weeks before the Spaniard's arrival.

"It would have been good to have worked with him," said Heskey.

"But I chose a different option, a different challenge, because I didn't know what was going to happen with Mr Houllier at the time.

"What's done is done, and there's a bit of distance between myself and Liverpool now. I have to see this as just another game.

"I had a great time at the club, the fans were good to me, and I enjoyed every minute of it. I feel I did well there."

Heskey believes it won't be long before his old club are challenging for the Premiership.

He said: "They are a great club with some great players, so you have to respect them.

"When you look at their defence it is so strong, and they're doing really well at the moment.

"That's no surprise when you look at Riise, Hyypia, Carragher and Finnan. They're all good players, all internationals."

Seems slightly revisionist at times to be honest. I dont remember it being his decision to leave

its got to be the players choice to some degree if they are under contract. He can always just refuse to go.

Don't like repeating myself, but.........................he never wanted to leave. The club tried to force him to go to Middlesbrough, but he didn't want to.

The club needed his wages to pay for Cisse.

Not much you don't...

Didn't you also say in the past that Rafa was miffed at not getting the chance to work with Emile?

of course he was forced out. he was ineffective but was one of the club's top earners. and he kept spouting rubbish like he didn't have anything to prove blah blah ... and despite ged protecting him, he slated the ex-boss by saying the ged was stale.

To those who listen, yes ;)

indeed.

heskey could have been world class though. had all the attributes but was just a f***ing big pansy.

nah, lacked a first touch, as well as being a great pansy

Collymore - now there's a fecker who could have had it all

Cisse had the best haircuts though.

Hmm, tough one to call for me - Heskey was a much better team player, but Cissé did knock them in for us at a pretty decent rate

I never rated Heskey - but with hindsight his contribution was pretty good. Compared to our other big-money signing strikers in the past decade or so he now looks like a shining light in a sea of s****. He did far, far more for us than Cisse in my view. Despite being a big pansy who couldn't play.

Heskey and Cisse weren't good enough for us.

Couldn't second guess the manager, but I believe that he would have been very happy to work with Heskey. I always get the impression for Benitez that he prefers unassuming players who have a decent workrate as opposed to 'star quality' but thats probably way off beam and more because of the finances of the clubs he has managed than because of the professional challenge

Personally I'd prefer Heskey to Crouch........ although he did have a really crap touch for such a big man

I'd love to see him had he had the Rafa attitude.

His performances in the first half of the treble season were incredible. If he produced those kind of performaces every week he's be considered the best striker in the world!

...which is why he's at Wigan

Now I'm not arguing who was better, but to my knowledge Heskey never netted a crucial penalty in the Champions League final nor scored a goal in the FA Cup final.

said this before but that chance at the kop end against man u when he spooned it then looked at his boot for comfort............ that was the end . He felt the wrath of the kop
