I don't think he's quick or athletic enough, wide midfielders have to cover more ground than anyone on the pitch.

 

They also get less of the ball, which would reduce his effectiveness.

Main reason I'm asking is I feel our defence could do with stevie and momo infront of them at the moment and I still want Alonso on the pitch. - and yes I know he's be putting crossed in from the half way, but with crouch up there its a crazy idea, but it just might go on the dole.

To steady the defence we need a few players to find form, and also settle on a fairly settled back line.

Actually NFL teams frequently turn college QBs into pro receivers and use receivers as passers for trick plays. Their ideal body types arent that different and both positions know the routes and plays of the offense so they can move around without having to do much learning.
