Brilliant but in a succesful team that was miles ahead of the rest..

Mind you when he got the ball he nearly always caused havoc.

I think Souness or Gerrard are the best or most complete players I've ever seen play for us though..

Complete yes, but Barnes when he was on form destroyed teams. Not about complete, he was just f***ing boss

I went to every game in 1990 and I can assure you that Digger almost single handedly won us the title that season

for those who haven't got it buy the season review from 87-88, barnes was different class that seson, it also includes the 5-0 demolition of notts forest which is a bit special

Had always been my best ever player until Gerrard goes and spoils it all. Gerrard has surpassed my all time Liverpool great - and i never thought i'd say that !!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;)

Barnes was and is still the best player we've had in my lifetime, and that includes Liddel. Gerrard may one day eclipse him as I feel he now has with Souness - but not quite yet.

He was a cracking rapper.

"I come from Jamaica, my name is John Barn-es,

When I my thing, the crowd go bananas."

Genius.

I read his autobiography. Shouldn't that be throw bananas

I don't get to see English football (us aside) as much as the majority of you... I'm interested to know if people think Rooney could become as good an attacking player as Barnes was for us?

take kenny out of the equation and IMO john barnes is the best player that has donned the red short in terms of raw talent and consistent performance. he is one of the legends snd if anyone hasnt read his book, then do it, its a great read,

No

Good as he is, he hasn't got the ability to be as good

None of our current squad compares with Barnesy, nobody in the team can do what he did for us in his pomp.

In that period up to his injury in 91 he was simply awesome. The buzz in the crowd whenever he got the ball was incredible.

His crossing on the run was the best I've ever seen (just ask John Aldridge), his link up play was superb, he could finish, head the ball and score from free kicks.

Best Liverpool player I've ever seen live too.

The only downside was watching him in the few years post his injury when he lost his mobility.

I always hated those pricks (usually fans who never went to a game) who used him as a scapegoat towards the end of his career. Even when he moved to the middle late on his career, he still had more ability than most of the rest of our squad put together. Even when we played against Boro on Ravanelli's debut in 96, Ravanelli said he was the best player on the pitch even then!

In that two year period from 88 to 90 he was the best player in Europe.

funnily enough, a manc fan said that to me once. He actually said that if English clubs were allowed in Europe Barnes would have been player of the year(s) between 88 to 90.

he was right.

Just a shame Europe didn't know about it! Europe's loss ;)

Yep. It's a travesty that he and the side he played in never got the chance to play in the European Cup. I doubt Milan would have been as dominant as they were in that period.

Was tat the one where he scored that overhead kick? And we wore the Ecru shirts?

Posted

The shirts, yeah, but the overhead kick was against Blackburn a few years earlier. At Middlesboro he was great, but overall it was a very poor season for the captain. Replaced with Paul Ince the next summer. That still feels a bit unreal. :(

Thanks got that muddled. The overhead was in a night game and the Mboro game was in the afternoon.
