Figaro Posted June 9, 2006 Posted June 9, 2006 Not the first comment - the reply From the Guardian blog about Early goals being the key http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/worldcup06/200...t_concedin.html phoenixknightJune 9, 2006 11:41 AMMadrid/esp why is it that on every possible blog on this website there's always some irish person to have a little pop. "bitter b******s" anyone? [Offensive? Unsuitable? Report this comment.] BermanJune 9, 2006 12:08 PMOxford/gbr Because the Irish never go over the top with their coverage of their sporting heros.
StevieC Posted June 9, 2006 Posted June 9, 2006 But my point is that we don't saturate you with our media. Sky News Ireland, BBC Northern Ireland, UTV, The Irish Sun, The Irish Mirror etc. are all leading with stories of metatarsals and "our boys". Errr, whose fault is that? Much the same as the 'support Ireland' bollix that we endured during '94 although admittedly there wasn't overblown expectation about the team going far.
Cobs Posted June 9, 2006 Posted June 9, 2006 Because the Irish never go over the top with their coverage of their sporting heros. like Barry McGuigan? Michelle Smith/De Bruin?
StevieC Posted June 9, 2006 Posted June 9, 2006 like Barry McGuigan? Michelle Smith/De Bruin? Surely it's only us who support plucky fighters who wilt at the tough end and drugged up cheats?
Herbie von Smalls Posted June 9, 2006 Posted June 9, 2006 (edited) like Barry McGuigan? who was lauded by the uk media as a 'british boxer' until he lost his title. i don't think you see either of those names you mentioned wheeled out as ubiquitously as geoff hurst either. But when they won their titles the reaction wasn't what i'd call restrained. Fair play for it too, sporting stars/heroes should be feted - but then i dont have a massive chip on my shoulder about all this
Mike Posted June 9, 2006 Posted June 9, 2006 that irish swimmer who was a drugs cheatshe was about 80
Benzo-13 Posted June 9, 2006 Posted June 9, 2006 Stephen Roche or Kieran Fallon are probably our best ever sportsmen.
Maldini Posted June 9, 2006 Posted June 9, 2006 that irish swimmer who was a drugs cheatshe was about 80Tommy Tiernan does a funny bit about her

Figaro Posted June 9, 2006 Author Posted June 9, 2006 The bike fell off the ceiling, the donkey bolted out of the living room and the gypsy bringing the stolen coal just walked over the newly laid tarmac path to our front door all at the same time thus diverting the attention of all us Paddys on here... I think given circumstances a few gramatical lapses won't go amiss
Ostrich Man Posted June 9, 2006 Posted June 9, 2006 but then i dont have a massive chip on my shoulder about all thisaye ye do.
adiman Posted June 9, 2006 Posted June 9, 2006 who was lauded by the uk media as a 'british boxer' until he lost his title. i don't think you see either of those names you mentioned wheeled out as ubiquitously as geoff hurst either.Best of British
StevieC Posted June 9, 2006 Posted June 9, 2006 Best of British * McGuigan was actually born in Clones, the Republic of Ireland, but is a British citizen and a former British champion. Christ they're all jumping on...
muleskinner Posted June 10, 2006 Posted June 10, 2006 Stephen Roche or Kieran Fallon are probably our best ever sportsmen. Sean Kelly, despite not winning the Tour or the Giro like Roche was better IMO. It has been said that Roche was also a drugs cheat . . . .
