i dont go along with that theory. The only great players we have had who made the step up to be a great manager that i can think of are toshack and kenny. There are also lots of examples of top players who have tried but not made it in the coaching/management arena. Rafa is a great example of a man who was an ok player, but is a wonderful manager, and there are plenty more who didnt excel as players but are successful managers e.g. wenger, maureen didnt play at all, our own ex mgr Gerard Houllier. etc As in any business being a successful part of an organisation in one role is no guarantee that you will make the grade in another role.
