There was a story posted on one of the forums that after the 2005 Champions League Final, Gerard Houllier apologised to Kewell for not allowing him to go for surgery while he was manager of the club because he was under pressure to have Kewell on the pitch for every game. There's no doubting the fact that when Kewell was match fit he served the club well - he played a significant role in getting the team to the CL Final in 2005 and the FA Cup in 2006. I'd be surprised if he played more than 10 games for the club since then and that's what most fans choose to remember of his time at the club.

A bit of revisionism there regarding Houllier's use of fullbacks. Markus Babbel certainly provided width on the right. Carragher was heavily criticised because the team was unbalanced with him at left back. Ziege provided width on the left but couldn't be arsed defending so he got shipped out. The illness to Babbel robbed us of width on the right and so began the great debacle of getting wide midfielders to provide width.

What's dubious. Hyypia said in an interview a few years back that Pellegrino was like a translator for Benitez in terms of conveying to the defenders what Benitez wanted them to do. He made a comment about how frustrating it was for both the manager and the players because Benitez wasn't getting his ideas about the system of defense across to them correctly before Pellegrino was signed. Signing Pellegrino as defensive coach will allow Rafa to concentrate on getting the forward play sorted out.

If what Barry says is true about O'Neill or anyone from the Villa hierarchy talking to him for the past few weeks then it's going to reflect badly on them as opposed to the player. Villa have been busy lining up their replacement midfield and it's quite evident that all the bluster in the press by O'Neill was a sham.

The only way to stop Torres is to prevent him from getting the ball. The only team that achieved that last season was Man Utd.
