Is it even possible to know for sure if a youth player will or will not make it for a side? Some players show potential but dont mature while others bloom late. I trust Rafa and the backroom staff a lot more than a random person's comment when it comes to giving games to the youth is because more often than not they'll be right about a player. I still remember last year, when a lot of people were wondering what the point was in keeping players like El Zhar in the reserve side when they were 'clearly not going to make it at Liverpool'. A year on and people want him to be played ahead of Pennant and even Benayoun. A bit same with Insua. Everyone was dying to see for him to be 'given a chance' for us and it seems that Rafa's not satisfied yet with him. Whether he'll make it here or not is still a doubt, he could go either way. There are too many unknown parameters to consider, such as mindset, hard work done in training, attitude towards fellow players, adaptability to the city/tactics/system etc', strengths, weaknesses and tactics of the current team and what a new player adds or removes from the system. It hence bemuses me when opinions, confident ones, fly around about whether so and so player will make it or he will not. The term 'make it' is very ambiguous as well. Of course you'd be quite sure if someone as talented as Gerrard, Fowler or Owen comes along in the youth setup or someone absolutely useless does too. But what about the middle ones? I'd be very happy with our youth system if we regularly have players such as Darren Fletcher or John O Shea come through it and its almost impossible to know at first if a young player can or can not make it atleast as strong, trusty back up to the side.
